Bren Bear stories from Grandmom & Grandpop!
Wheeeee! I can't wait to read next week's story! Many thanks to Gmom and Gpop for taking the time to do this for us.
For the Friends of Brendan - Since the pictures are finished, and all your cookies made, how about a few stories about Brendan to fill the void??? Thanks to all of you faithful voters for spending so much time voting for Brendan. After all the hard work if we come in second to Aaron it would be a great honor. We have met his late grandfather, father and uncle and they are great people.
When Brendan was in 7/8th grade and Sean was swimming with the High School we would go to the meets. Brendan would be on the deck with the H.S boys, cheering them on as if he were one of them. In his freshman year when he went out for the swim team, at the first meeting, the coach asked Brendan, what was his best time in the breast and when Bren. told him, the coach said 'your breaststroke not your freestyle'. Needless to say the coach was amazed. Sean's team, of which he was captain, the year earlier, won the league championship, for the first time in many years. With Brendan having a major part they were league champions when he was in his freshman year. His times in I.M. and the breaststroke were the best in the county.
Prior to districts,at which you have to qualify for states, Brendan was in woodshop class and cut the top of two fingers on the power saw. After the accident Brendan was really upset because the doctor told him no swimming for 10 days. His father seeing how upset he was reassured him that he always had next year to prove himself. Brendan said, 'Dad, I am not upset for me, I am upset for the seniors on the relay team who will not go to states if I don't swim." So his father called the family doctor and explained the situation, the doctor did not want to override the surgeon who stitched the fingers. However, his father told him that Brendan would not be in the water for more than 1 min. for Breast, and 30 seconds, for the relay. Finally, the doctor said, 'no warm-ups, and cover the bandage with a rubber glove, to keep it from getting wet. After each time in the water you have to change the bandage. Before entering the water at Districts Brendan had to go to the officials, show the bandage and glove, and get permission to swim. The officials said it was okay because they felt it was more a hindrance than an advantage. He swam and took a first in the breast and the relay team qualified for states. Following the districts, John Lohn's article in the Del. Co. News read, "HANSEN IS A CUT ABOVE".
At States Brendan was seated third behind the AAA champion from the previous year and the AA Champion from the previous year who moved up to AAA. Swimming with these two champions Brendan was behind until the last five yards of the last lap pulling ahead and winning the race. This was one of the most memorable of Brendan's races. The first of his four consecutive state titles. The relay team took a fifth which was great for those swimmers. In his sophomore year, Brendan tied Jeremy Linn's state record, in his Junior year he broke the state record, and in his senior he broke his own state record, which was and still is the National Public School Record. That year he was voted the "Most Outstanding Swimmer in Pennsylvania."
Next Week's Story -"How Lena's Pumpkin met Ian"
Wheeeee! I can't wait to read next week's story! Many thanks to Gmom and Gpop for taking the time to do this for us.

Well,I'm a posting fool today but I couldn't resist adding one more. It's was obvious to me that Bren is all about the team just because of the relay dynamic. So reading this I wasn't surprised, just even more impressed.
Grandma & Grandpop, thanks for the great story and the ones to come. I wish I could express how much it means that y'all want to share these with us. It's not everyday that fans get this much interaction with the person they admire let alone their family. *Hugs all the Family*

Thanks so much Grandmom and Grandpop!! Its so great to hear stories about Bren from the best of sources. Its so easy to see how much of a dedicated person Brendan is, and all of us fans are appreciative to get to interact with him and his family here at BHO.

Wow, lovely stories. Thanks so much for sharing them
And don't worry, we're not coming second. We're gonna win.
Brendan's swimmign skills and dedication to the team amazed me since the beginning, but getting to know more of his background is overwhelming. I have no words for that.
I'm very interested in knowming how my Pumpkin met Ian.
Not to mention, when and how he learnt how to handle a bow.

What great stories, thanks Grandmom and Grandpop! It's amazing to see how a champion was always a champion, in both accomplishment and attitude.
For some reason, I thought John Lohn was in his 20s, so when I read that he wrote an article when Brendan was a freshman, I thought, "What was John, 17?" Then I realized I probably have my facts (or rather, fiction) wrong.

it's out of the woodwork for me. thanks grandmom and grandpop for the trip down memory lane. hope we'll see one another soon. it seems like yesterday we were at states. i'll never forget the loud ooooh from the crowd as brendan hit the wall for his pub-school record. it was nuts.
from watching him as a high school kid first, brendan has never been about himself. it's always teammates first, second, third and brendan last. he was always walking the deck, cheering on lane 4 as loud as lane 6. that's what it's about.
one of the best things about covering brendan is the friendship i've been fortunate enough to strike up with his family. they've been so helpful, especially in the beginning, and so wonderful as down-to-earth people who care so much about so many.
and this site is unreal. you guys have it all, and thanks a bunch with your blog memories. that'll help a ton. can't wait to see what the future brings.
and to crackinup, you were close. i was 18 and a college freshman when i started covering brendan. sadly, i'm now 28. where does the time go? i can't figure it out.
happy holidays everyone.

Thanks so much to Grandmom and Grandpop for the Brendan stories! It's really interesting to me how these athletes develop their talents as youngsters. And John, you are but a baby at 28! I enjoy reading your articles too. Keep up the good work!
By
BeachGirl, at 12/22/2004 7:20 PM
John, thanks for posting. And 28 is a pretty decent age. I'm glad our posts are helpful for something.
By
Lena, at 12/22/2004 7:29 PM
Just another example of the kind of person Brendan is, putting his teammates above himself.
John - Seriously you're around my age. Just a pup, yet! =)
By
Stephie Mc, at 12/22/2004 8:15 PM
John, you did it! Thanks for the nice comments and ladies you should all know that John is one handsome guy! He maybe 28 years old but he still gets carded in bars. I could not believe it until I witnessed it for myself. He says it happens quite often. Mrs.H

Thanks G-Peeps! Those are wonderful stories. And how nice for john to post! We have been reading your words for so long it seems funny for you to be reading ours! What a wonderful thing to know at such a young age that you are extraordinary. That was one of the things that I first noticed about our B-Man. He really does seem to be about his team. The story about the hand injury is priceless. Thank you again.

Hurray, a post from John! (Psst, he's handsome? And follows swimming? Hey John, are you single? If you've read these threads, you know we had to ask.)
John, I'm glad to hear my mathematical skills did not completely fail me. In case you read this again, I must officially add that you are a fabulous writer with an incredible knack for painting a vivid picture of both Brendan and the events surrounding his career. I always love reading your articles. Many thanks for all your contributions -- it shouldn't have struck me as surprising that you would be that capable at age 18!

kimberly - you're from SB, what a small world! nope, i'm done with school ... for now at least. i keep telling myself that higher education made me the person i am today (whether that's good or bad, i can't say) and am still dropping the occasional "grad school" mention every now and then. how 'bout you?
By
Manda, at 12/22/2004 10:45 PM
Just wanted to pop in quickly and say thanks to Grandmom and Grandpop! I haven't posted in a few days because I'm helping my sister move into a new apartment, but I always find time to read what's new in here at least once a day. That was a fun story to read, and I can't wait to read future ones!
By
Janine, at 12/22/2004 11:33 PM

By

Aw thanks so much Grandmom & Grandpop :o) its just nice to read how everything started for him and now to see where he is today, and to think about his bright future. *excuse me while i get all mushy* ;)

Kim, at 12/23/2004 12:56 AM
Lena, I like your plan. *high five*
Speaking of John, I just came across this article that I hadn't read before. Fun to read in hindsight, B-Man talks about chasing dolphin boy down for the world record. ;-)

I still find it so refreshinmg the amount of time and information that the Hansens are willing to give us. I literally squee everytime I see that one of them has logged onto the site.
Also, nice to see you John.
By
Dana, at 12/23/2004 5:55 AM
Well,it's about time you posted John...lol. See,if your single,we already have a match for you. We should actually start charging for this. ;p We could make enough profit for us all to go to WC. That would be a funny story, how BHO turned into a dating service.
By
blairbecky, at 12/23/2004 6:24 AM
Just wanted to say hi to Manda and Stephanie. (Cool name, girl!)
And crackinup, sounds like a plan to me! ;) I told you Lena has the brains of the operation, she comes up with all the good ideas.

Look at the times you guys are up posting! I guess that says it all. John did not respond to your ? so I will. Yes, he is single, handsome, the nicest guy you would ever want to meet, knows more about swimming then me at this point. We will get those t-shirts and find each other at Indy or WC and go out. Although we would not need the t-shirts if we get those pics up soon???Mrs.H

There's a saying about truly wonderful people, it's something Bruce Hornsby weaves into songs occasionally: "they have a lot of room in the sleigh." In homage to Santa I thought it would be especially appropriate today. :) The Hansens have a lot of room in their sleigh, they fit a big family, connections to swimming families all over America, an entire local community of people pulling for their son, and perhaps the least among them, us. John saw it about seven or eight years before anyone else.
Hey John, send a pic to Michelle, for whatever reason I had pictured you very fatherly - mid forties, minimum. Your writing is so high-quality that I assumed it had developed over time and you'd be weathered, grizzled. ;) Kind of an exciting development to hear you're 28, actually. I'm going to be in Indiana on business over worlds, that's reason number nine thousand to get tickets and hit the natatorium.
And speaking of Jeremy Linn, anyone seen his tattoos lately? We got file photos of him at a clinic last year, and he's inked up. He makes rings and horns look saintly in comparison. I hope he's alright, his has been a harder road, without support anywhere near the quantity and quality of the Hansens.

So yall got to hear the cut fingers story. I dont think the story does tell you much about the pain I went through swimming and than the pain killers. After the meet was over I was in pretty bad shape and my dad handed me a pain killer, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL THING....Sean was swimming in a college meet that night so the fam packed up and went to see him at his meet. Needless to say I am in the back seat.....laughing at everything...I mean everything and had my mom and dad laughing at me, who was buzzed in the back. And nothing was hurting after that it was great. It was tough to fight through but I still have the scars on my fingers to remind me everyday, to stay the hell away from heavy machinery.
By
pumkin, at 12/23/2004 9:57 AM
Mrs. H...when you said "Yes, he is single, handsome, the nicest guy you would ever want to meet," did you mean John, Pumpkin, or Sean? You really need to specify! LOL! Nobody wants Lovely Lena to go crazy trying to figure out!
By
Kimberly, at 12/23/2004 10:08 AM
It was tough to fight through but I still have the scars on my fingers to remind me everyday, to stay the hell away from heavy machinery.HA! That's priceless.
So I guess carpentry isn't an option when you retire from swimming, Brendan?
By

Aunt C, Aunt K..we found the meds you wanted! Pumpkin has be hoarding them.

Mrs.H,I'm a third shifter so early in the morning is my nighttime. That's why I'm usually one of the last to post on alot of these threads. Especially at weird times of the day and night.
Pumkin,I work in a factory so I've seen many a digit mangled and such. I hardly leave my little office because I'm so clumsy. :) Did you get attack or mobbed last night by any girls in the name of BHO?
By
blairbecky, at 12/23/2004 10:12 AM
Brendan - Feel free to return the power tools from Home Depot I sent you! =)
I'd give anything to see "buzzed Brendan" laughing himself silly in the back seat! haha!
By
Stephie Mc, at 12/23/2004 10:12 AM
Nice to see Bren making time on his busy shopping schedule to find us.
Now I know the weakness muahahahaha!
By
Dana, at 12/23/2004 10:18 AM
It was tough to fight through but I still have the scars on my fingers to remind me everyday, to stay the hell away from heavy machinery.Guess this means I shouldn't ask you to bring the snowblower to Dayton and come dig me out, eh? I would have offered hot chocolate with amaretto, but it probably wouldn't be nearly as good a buzz as you had that day. Pain meds rock! ;)
So on another topic, how was the Onion, Bren? Anyone come by and play with you and Sean?
By
JHD, at 12/23/2004 10:21 AM
"Anyone come by and play with you and Sean?"
I am very dirty....
By
Dana, at 12/23/2004 10:23 AM
I can't believe that I never noticed a scar on Toiger's hand with as many hours as I have sepnt looking at them. Such nice hands..... OH and DANA CARA, (there is that dana specific enough?) " mid forties, minimum. Your writing is so high-quality that I assumed it had developed over time and you'd be weathered, grizzled." Not all of us are in our 20's, please be careful what age group you call withered and grizzled. ;)
By
lala, at 12/23/2004 10:31 AM
So I guess you are quite stuck as well JHD. Glad I'm not alone. Lala, you made me laugh out loud. I didn't even catch that when Dana posted.
By
blairbecky, at 12/23/2004 10:38 AM
Nope, you're not alone blairbecky. I just wish that work had shut down completely, instead of dragging me in at 4pm today. Then I wouldn't have to worry about whether my car was dug out or not.
Two consolations: I'll only have to be there until 8pm, and the odds are it'll be really quiet, so I can hang on the blog (and OG) practically undisturbed.
Anyway, off for Round 2 of shoveling!
By
JHD, at 12/23/2004 10:56 AM
Loves, that's why I winked! ;) Just playing.
You girls could never be whethered and grizzled. But you must admit it's wildly entertaining to imagine John looking like Moses, with a walking stick and a long white beard, parking in the handicapped spot out front of the natatorium and purveying his decades of swimming wisdom to the readers of the Delco Times. ;)
By
Dana Cara, at 12/23/2004 11:07 AM
Bren my friend and I are still curious about that hockey game next week..will you be at the whole game??
By
LongHornLove, at 12/23/2004 11:21 AM
Apparently, Pumpkin you're gonna post each time I'm not here. *sighs* We're destined to be apart ::tear running::
Anyway, meds did the trick, uh? There are no pics/tapes of high on meds Brendan?
And please, for the love of me, stay away from heavy machinery. Your hands are way too precious for being at risk.
By
Lena, at 12/23/2004 11:32 AM
And Mrs H, there's a time difference between the hour in teh blog and my real hour...
By
Lena, at 12/23/2004 11:52 AM
Great story! Reminds me of a high school kid I saw at the pool the other day, kicking with a cast on his arm, all wrapped up in plastic. Swimmers never say die, the worst Ive ever done though is swam with a broken toe....OUCH pushing off the walls really hurt.
By
Kate, at 12/23/2004 3:41 PM
It was tough to fight through but I still have the scars on my fingers to remind me everyday, to stay the hell away from heavy machinery.Hahaha! I mean, I can only imagine the severe pain, particularly when you add chlorine into the mix (*cringe*), but I admire the lesson learned.
Mrs H., thanks for the insider info. ;-) I'm rather looking forward to meeting this whole clan of BHO folk - family, friends and bloggers alike - at whatever meet it ends up being! In the meantime, I'm off to spend Chrismakkuh (literally, I'm Jewish and yet celebrate both) with my own clan, so if I don't make it back on here in the next couple days (which would be tragedy), Happy Holidays to all!
By
crackinup, at 12/23/2004 6:02 PM

Ange ~ dont forget .. we're moving to Austin in less than 4 years!
