Pumpkin Meets the Crockah
From the Grandpeeps!
Following his sophmore year, in which he tied the state record of Jeremy Linn and qualified for the Junior National Team, Brendan went to a Camp, that Ian also attended, before going to Sheffield, England. This was the first International Meet for Brendan. It was there he roomed with Ian, as he put it, a tall, skinny, kid from Maine. He called us from England, when he couldn't get his mother. We asked him whom he was rooming with Brendan said, 'some geek from Maine.' Ian was with him and we heard them both laughing. They hit it off great during this time and Ian said,' wouldn't it be great if we could go to the same college'. After returning home they kept in touch with each other for the next two years.
In the summer of their junior year both Ian and Brendan were recruited by and visited most of the same schools. Three of the schools Ian visited were Arizona, Auburn, and Texas. They also had invitations from Stanford, Michigan and many others. On some of these visits their parents went with them. Naturally, both boys like all the schools they visited. The boys however, were unaware that Mrs. C and Mrs. H were comparing notes concerning each of their visits discussing the pros and cons of each of the schools. The moms were in complete agreement about each school. During the long drive home from one visit Brendan had made up his mind that was the school he wanted to go to it was not Texas. When Brendan visited Texas he was impressed with the facilities, the school and Eddie Reese as a coach. When Brendan compared each school he had visited with two columns one with the pros and the other with the cons for each school. It was then he told his dad, I have decided to sign with Texas. When asked why, Brendan said, each school we visited, the schools were nice, the facilities were good, it came down to the coach. Brendan said each of the coaches said 'what an asset he would be for the team and for the school.'Eddie Reese was the only coach who asked Brendan, 'what do you want to get from your swimming, what are your goals.' When Brendan told him Eddie said, 'I'll get you there'. Brendan said he was the only one who asked me what I wanted. I knew then that I could work with Eddie.
Ian called Brendan and told him he was going to sign with Texas. Brendan was surprised and said 'I thought you were going to go to Arizona'. Brendan was upstairs and he started jumping up and down and yelling he was so happy. Mrs. H. couldn't figure out what was happening. He told Ian he also signed with Texas.
We have gone to Texas every December, for the Texas Invitational and to all of the NCAA's wherever they were held. At one time we met the woman who does all of the travel arrangements for the various Texas teams. She asked us who we were there to see and was really excited to meet us. She told us she has been Texas for nine years and never met a boy as nice as Brendan. She said no matter where he would see her he would go out of his way to stop and talk to her asking how she was doing etc. As she told us, he really means it too. If you remember Rowdy Gaines, in Indianapolis, said when Brendan was waiting behind the starting blocks. Rowdy said, 'Brendan is not only a good swimmer, he is even a better person.' That says it all. As grandparents we are naturally prejudice, but Rowdy Gaines had no reason to say what he did. Everyone who comes in contact with Brendan echoes what Rowdy Gaines said.

I can just picture Bren jumping up and down in his room.
Oh, and I'd have to agreee with Rowdy too. ;)

Thanks Grandmom and Grandpop for sharing a little Brendan/Ian history! I love the "some geek from Maine." And, the image of Brendan on the phone with Ian, jumping up and down, with Mrs. H downstairs trying to figure out what is going on, is too funny!

No,no that won't work anymore after he has morphed into this tall, cute as a button butterfly powerhouse!!!!
Thans G-mom and G-pop for telling us this wonderful story on how Bren and Ian became friends. Its so nice how they stayed in touch after that summer and Bren was so happy that they would get to be together for college. It was fate that they were roomed together. Can you imagine?..its a great story on how the future GREATEST breaststroker and butterfly kings came to meet each other AND becoming friends AND going to the same college..its great!!!!

Thanks so much for the story Grandpop and Grandmom! I always wondered how the Trio met and became friends. I assumed they just met at Texas. Did Brendan meet Aaron before Texas too?
Rowdy Gaines is a smart man. It seems like Brendan is just an all around great guy. =)

Ditto Janine--I always assumed that they met at UT. Its cool to hear the "real story" :) Thanks for posting Grandma & Grandpop!

What a lovely, sweet story.
It's nice to see that the people you meet on the road are the ones that become your closest friends in the end... casue after everything else fades away, friendship is still there.
sorry, I'm so emotional today cause I just got back from seeing my best friend and this story just fits a lot.

The one thing that stuck in my head after the sweetness of that story was how cute Bren probally looked jumping up and down. True friends don't come along often,so when you meet one,it just feels right. I have a friend that I will talk to forever. We don't speak too often anymore because of distance and schedules. The cool thing is I can call her after months and we pick up where we left off.
Gmom and Gpop, thanks for the great story. If you are loved by many people, must mean you are doing something right. Seems to me a certain family helped Bren be the person he is today.
Whew, serious Blair today. Must be because tomorrow's Monday. :p

aww, that was such a cute story!
And yes, I agree, really good friends are hard to come by, and if you are lucky enough, you should hold on to them.
"a tall, skinny kid from Maine.".....oh just say it. LANKY. He was a lanky geek from Maine. haha.

aww, that is such a great story. i love hearing stuff about friendships starting like that. it's so cute. it was cute how mrs. c and mrs. h were comparing notes on schools. i liked how brendan picked UT. that just shows how much thought must have gone into it. :)
"Everyone who comes in contact with Brendan echoes what Rowdy Gaines said"
it's kinda funny, cause that's really true with me. when i came back from indy i was like, "o, guess who i met..blah blah...Brendan is the nicest guy in the world. He is so sweet." :D
this is somewhat off topic, but did anyone know that Aaron was on I love the 90s. I was watching it today, think it was 91 and Aaron talked about the Rugrats. haha, it was cute.
By
Cait, at 1/30/2005 4:26 PM
What a nice story - I'd always assumed Brendan and Ian had met at UT. And I completely agree with what Rowdy Gaines said - the fact that Brendan actually comes on here and posts as well as his family says a lot about his character and the Hansens I think.
Thanks for sharing Gmom and Gpop! :-)
Oh and Cait, I saw I love the 90's too - they didn't include enough Aaron I thought, but it was still a nice surprise :-D

See how much better it is to add your words to the conversation?
Come out AnonyMice. I can see you hiding there. It is better to be on my team than on my opposition.

Thanks so much for the cute story! I am so glad they both ended up in Texas.

I love that story. I love when you meet a friends in your teens and keep them forever. I know that Bren is planning to stay in Texas, but is Ian? It would be cool if they could be old Grandpop's together. Telling stories about their lives:
"When we were young we had to swim for 4 hours a day! In the rain. Uphill! You kids have it so easy!"
Thanks for the story Gpeeps. We haven't heard from you in such a long time.

Or "We had to swim in 102 degree weather in Greece, now everything is indoor for you kids !!"
*tear* what a lovely story grandma and grandpop !! Thanks for sharing -- It is really nice to know the history of the guys and all =)
"some geek from Maine." -- was the icing on the cake of the story ;)

"We had to swim in 102 degree weather in Greece, now everything is indoor for you kids !!"
And then Aaron will say. "You think you had it bad? I had to do that too. But I had to do it on my back!"
Why do I think these boys will be like my Grandpa was? haha! Oh, probably because he was an amazing man too.
By
lala, at 1/31/2005 12:54 AM
hi ya i like the story( especially as they met in England)
i thought i might as well join the trend and come out of hiding as well.
By
twinkle, at 1/31/2005 1:04 AM
Wow, that is a great story.
For some reason, as I read the story, I just couldn't picture the "geek from Maine" ending up at the University of Arizona.
Things happen for a reason, and good thing that both Brendan and Ian ended up at Texas. The situation definitely worked for them.
Thanks for the story, Brendan's grandparents!

i love it! that must have been so much fun for bren to realize one of his good friends was going to be with him at school. i can imagine they helped each other a lot their freshman year -- everybody needs support to survive their first time out on their own like that. what we really need now is a great "almost burned down the dorm building trying to cook mac-and-cheese" story, and we're all set! :) c'mon, i'm sure you've got 'em, hansen clan!
and what bren felt about what coach reese said, that just shows what a true champion he is. he wanted to get the best out of himself and push his limits. perfect!
well, i may be just advertising my ignorance here, but i was a little confused on a couple of parts ...
"As grandparents we are naturally and many others."
"When Brendan compared each school he had visited with two columns one with the pros and the other prejudice, but Rowdy Gaines had no reason to say what he did."
i think i got the jist of what they were trying to say, but are there parts missing or something? just wondering ...
great story! thanks a lot, grandma & grandpop. it really makes me wish my grandparents were still around to tell stories of my humble beginnings and accomplishments. oh wait, that would mean i'd have to accomplish something. aahhh. never mind. :)

SUCH a cute story ... "some geek from Maine." Sounds like Brendan and Ian were a true meeting of the minds.
I love how his mother and his aunt were fully in harmony over his college choices. How sweet.
