Some quotes:
The Daily Times sports department put together its annual year-end tribute to Delco's Sports Figure of the Year Friday. Never in the relatively short history of this feature, was the decision more difficult than it was in 2004. That's one of the reasons we felt compelled to include an image of Jameer Nelson on our Back Page along with that of our choice, Olympic swimming medalist and world record-holder Brendan Hansen.
We have been extremely fortunate to have a couple of sports writers in John Lohn and Rob Knox who developed a rapport with Hansen and Nelson, respectively, before the two athletes became nationally known.
Hansen has called Lohn from points all over the globe, including Athens this summer. The stories we ran on Hansen from Athens were as good or better than the ones other papers ran from writers who were there.
In Hansen's case, we have been able to chronicle his trips home when he would show up at the Daily Times Elite Meet and sign autographs for the impressionable young kids who idolized him.
Nelson has become very involved with Youth Interlock, the very successful program for young people in Chester, giving of his time and some of his new-found wealth.
They are two young men who haven't forgotten their roots because they know it is in those roots where the foundation for their success can be found.
Like many sports fans in the county, we were able to follow the exploits of two of Delco's favorite sons on national television throughout 2004.
There was more swimming watched in this sports department than any in America between the Olympic Trials and then the Summer Games.
Such was the high level of expectation in Athens for Hansen that there was a twinge of disappointment in silver and bronze in the 100 and 200, respectively. But there's no diminishing the value of an Olympic medal in any athletic endeavor and don't forget, Hansen still owns the world records in both events.

Congrats to the Longhorns on their victory over the Wolverines at the Rose Bowl today. Caught a quick camera shot on Michael Phelps sporting the Michigan hat, but saw no Trio anywhere for Texas.

I recall in Brendan's Q & A that he said something about not being able to play any musical instruments. I am so grateful for that, because I would much rather see him in a Longhorns swimming uniform than a Longhorns band uniform!!! Yikes...the Longhorn Band should rebel!!!!!!!!! I'm with you guys; Aaron should have made an appearance at today's game; Pasadena isn't really that far away from the OC. I sure hope that it wasn't the case that he was in fact there, and some uninformed camera guy missed a prime opportunity.
Lena....I'm getting sick again; exactly how long were you feeling horrible? I hope that you are finally well because this really stinks. I just got over the tonsillitis, and I think its back.....

Congrats to the longhorns!
No Good, I'm finally starting to feel better, but still really tired... just get lots of rest and go see a doctor as soon as possible.

Happy New Year everyone!!! Woo-hoo to the Longhorns!!! I didn't see Michael Phelps or Matthew McConaghey, heck I didn't even see the game. But it's all about the Longhorns! The articles only further illustrate Brendan's excellence and magnificence. Go Brendan!

"Yikes...the Longhorn Band should rebel!!!!!"
PML, I was thinking the same thing earlier!! How old are these uniforms anyway??
I didn't see any celebs at the game either, I only caught the last couple of minutes when TEXAS won!! Yeah!!!

No Good,I'm with you on the sickness. It seems to come and go but it's just a good ol' cold. The other day I was swimming and popping cough drops like they were nothing. Hard to breathe when you have a stopped up noise and a mouthful of cough drop. I'm stubborn though so I made it work. :p
What a great group of articles. I liked where the guy was talking about the Phillies floundering but not Bren. So true. I bet this past year flew by for him. Between training, traveling and competing it seems like he didn't have time for much else.
Congrats to Texas! I'm not a big college football fan but I know alot of people on here were excited. Kind of like my Illinois thing. I understand completely. 14-0 is so sweet. :)

I was rooting for Michigan on this one (since I live in MI and want to go to U of M) But congrats to Texas, they played a great game.
I was looking for the trio and for Michael in the crowd, but I didnt see anyone. Too bad!

Can someone describe the uniforms? I didn't get the game in Argentina...
By
Lena, at 1/02/2005 12:15 AM
I absolutely did NOT watch any football today, but congrats to Texas. I think Mrs. H said Brendan was going to be in Philly through tomorrow so I doubt he was at the game, although it would have been great to see the trio there.
I really enjoyed reading all the Bren Bear articles this morning. What a great way to start the New Year!

Lena, the outfits are bad. I went to the band website and found multiple pics of it. here is one.
All i have to say is that I will never complain again about the outfit I wore at UNC.

Those are awful! who designs them?
By
Lena, at 1/02/2005 12:38 AM
YIKES! Those are pretty bad. My son's high school was the patriots and their uniforms made them look like little nutcrackers. I have a picture somewhere. If I can find it I'll post a link. He looked so funny in his little feathered cap. But those Longhorn uniforms are hideous.

I will keep my Carolina blue and white sequins any day over those uniforms

Phelps was at the game? Weird he flew all the way to California.

Okay the UT band uniforms are fully Ick! I felt that this guy was Aaron and I squeeled and my friends all laughed. Then when Michael showed up they really laughed. Michael showed up they really laughed. And said... "How did you do that? How can you spot the swimmers in a crowd that size??!" It was fun. Tee hee! I really thought that guys was Aaron.....
By
lala, at 1/02/2005 1:28 AM
Sorry to double post but what made me think it was Aaron is how FUG that hat is!! There were red bulls stuck on the tips of the horns!! I noticed that first and thought only Aaron could wear a hat that ugly..then it looked JUST LIKE HIM!!
By
lala, at 1/02/2005 1:34 AM
When you look that good and have that much talent you can wear anything you want! That guy does look a lot like him.

Haha, alright, who are we kidding. Band uniforms, by definition, are hideous. They are of varying degrees of hideous, to be fair, but this is all relative on a scale of "ugh" to "really ugh". (I am allowed to say this, as a former marching band member.) And incidentally, I've heard great things about the UM band, but did anyone else notice that they sounded just a little out of tune? The Longhorn band was awesome though - 360 members! Dang!
jenny, I caught Matthew on TV too and bust a gut laughing. I think the reporters were expecting him to talk about movies or something, then suddenly he starts talking football strategy and actually turns to watch the game during his interview. The commentators didn't know what to do. You could almost hear them thinking, "Did he just bring up the speed of their running game? Um, what do we respond to that?"
Matthew Mchoweveryouspellit is adorable though, almost made up for there being no Trio spottings. (At least not during the first half, I lost interest at that point and left my apt.)
On topic: Yay for all the Brendan press! Much deserved.

Band Uniforms - Yeah, they are ugly and they end up being smelly. However, nothing was worse than my first year of pep band at Boston U when we wore "Where is Waldo" stripred shirts. People would yell that at us everytime we walked in to a venue.
Oh wait, I just saw UT's uniforms. They are orange and white with fringe.. ok, that is worse than the "Where's Waldo" shirts!
Back on topic - It's great to see Brendan mentioned in the press. I hope this is just the begining of a Handsome media frenzy! =)

Stephie Mc, at 1/02/2005 11:36 AM
I missed Matthew McConaughey on TV? Talking football? *cries*
Thank God the Longhorns won. I hate Michigan! (no I'm not a OSU fan either, it has more to do with CCHA rivalries...go 'Skins/'Hawks!)
And the band uniforms....definitely ugly. Makes the "Prison B*tch" warmups look chic in comparison...
By
JHD, at 1/02/2005 1:03 PM
Haha, Stephie Mc -- we had Waldo shirts in our pep band too! I have a whole series of pics of myself in red and white stripes. But really, even an ugly rugby shirt is better than a marching band uniform.
By
crackinup, at 1/02/2005 4:44 PM
I wonder who came up with that first horrible first marching band uniform.
But my real question is, how and why did they catch on. I mean, what kind of disgusting fad is that?
