Your "Elevator Speech"
In business they have this thing called an "Elevator Speech", which is basically the 2-3 minute speech you prepare to give an investor/client that grabs attention and says a lot in a few words. The idea being that you should be able to get them interested in the time it takes for you to go from the top floor to the bottom (in an elevator). I thought it would be fun to ask each of you what your "elevator speech" would be if you met Brendan. You have 2-3 minutes to tell him everything you want to say...GO!

Wow, Steph, you've got this one thought through!
I don't get phased too easily meeting people (even attractive medal winning Olympian male swimmers...it's really not too intimidating), so I'd just strike up a conversation about the weather, crack a joke about Screamer-Cheater, and talk about whatever song was on my iPod at the moment.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 1:23 PM
O.k. I'm assuming that I've already lost 45 seconds of my 2-3 minutes because of sheer panic. I'll be waging a battle in my mind going, "Dude! It's Brendan Hansen!Should I...?" After I peel my tongue off the roof of my mouth, I'd probably ask for his autograph. Then I'd compliment his swimming (great, inspirational, la dee da...). I'd wish him luck, then I'd probably step out of the elevator on a floor that's not even mind just to run away (run away!) before I burst into hysterical giggles over how silly I am.

Dana, at 1/03/2005 2:00 PM
I'd try to say something like StephieMc said (but none of it would come out right) then I'm sure I'd bring up Lance Armstrong and how much I love him (assuming he does too since we both live in Austin and read his books)
I wouldn't ask for a picture but just tell him that I'd PhotoShop a picture of us together later, no worries. Even though I have no idea how to do that.

OK, let's see if I can find my voice in this one...
"Hi Brendan, I'm a fan of you from Brendan Hansen Online"
(then he politely asks for my name, as I'm sure his mother raised him to)
"I'm Lena, Pumpkin (yes, I get to use the nickname cause I invented it)"
(Smiles exchanges)
"So, I can go on and on about how a great swimmer you are and everything you have done, but you know all that better than I do." (battes eyelashes) "So, how about I tell you I think you're a really cool guy and it's great to get to meet you. Would it be a terrible bother to ask you for a pic?"
(he smiles and agrees and we take a pic)
Then he aks me if I want something else
"Well, actually I was wondering if you may want something else. Like a couple of coffee or something. We can have one together. Or you can order one and drink it on your own and I'll pay for it. We can discuss archery tactics"
Then we'll proceed to go get the cup of coffee... or wasn't this a "elevator flirt thing"?
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 2:39 PM
Call me crazy, but I don't think I'd ask him about swimming at all unless it was in the context of where we were or whatever. I'd just treat him like a normal guy, maybe a little flirty, maybe not, lotta smiling either way, just the usual. There's a saying, "the gods among men act like men among gods." That's so true, the best/most accomplished guys I know seem to stay humble and make friends who treat them like perfectly normal dudes. :) I have a pretty good friend who's a NFL center and the night we met, I teased him about his pic on ESPN and asked him what his parents were like, how he grew up. He called me the next day. That was three years ago and it was the basis of one of my more treasured friendships. At the end of the day swimming might be his job and his passion but it's clearly not his only one. And when you spend three hours a day with your ears underwater, you've probably developed yourself into an intellectually interesting person, if only because you had to entertain yourself! Ha.

Dana Cara, at 1/03/2005 4:40 PM
Ok, mine would be a combination Dana and Dana Cara's. After about a minute of being star struck and sort of staring at him grinning like an idiot i would force myself to start a conversation.
I would try to treat him like a normal person while i asked him for his picture and autograph. I would of course mention that i post on BHO all the time and tell him my screen name. Since we both live in austin i would probably try to mention that..hehe and suggest we get together sometime.
then he would proceed to thinking im going to become some sort of stalker which wouldnt be 100% correct. ;) truthfully i dont know what i would do cuz i never know how i would behave until im in the situation itself. we'll see though when i finally do get to meet him which i dont know when that is but hopefully its sooner than later.
well, off to dinner to celebrate the big birthday. later gaters

jenny, at 1/03/2005 5:10 PM
As I am married in real life, I wouldn't do anything except to say that I admired him as a person who represented our country well in the Olympics. Since I would most likely be with my two boys, I'd probably ask him about swimming as a child, tell him that I'd like for my boys to learn how to swim, what does he suggest doing, blah blah blah. I think I would leave out that I talk about him online, even though it's only on the best of terms.
By
BeachGirl, at 1/03/2005 5:32 PM
Ok, well while I'd like to THINK I'd be all cool like Dana Cara and Lena, I strongly suspect there'd be some Dana thrown in there too. But I'd TRY to thank him for all the support he gives BHO by posting on the blog when he can and also for representing us so well when he competes with the USA on his cap. I'd also like to think I'd get another Fan Q&A out of him and I'd most definitely ask for a picture. I can't believe no one has said they'd ask for a hug or to kiss him on the cheek! I know some of you absolutely would. I might. ;)

Michelle, at 1/03/2005 6:06 PM
And thanks for posting the pics Kat!

Ok, it is obvious that I would know what to say to Bren if we were in an elevator....so I thought I would give a few tips.
1. Dont be star struck, he is a down to earth guy so try not to get the tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth or giggle (then he would probably think you are just silly).
2. If you saw him compete somewhere...definitely mention it....but dont drone on about it (especially if you want to go somewhere after the elevator).
3. Absolutely mention that you post on the blog, after all he does too and he is sincere in the fan appreciation department.
4. What would really get him smiling, is if you called him the nickname you gave him....something like this Hey your Pumpkin, I mean Brendan....guess you can tell I visit your website a lot. That should open up the dialogue
5. If you have kids with you....that is awesome Bren really likes kids and seems to know exactly what to say to them....
6. Recognize his accomplishments but don't go on and on about...he would probably get embarrassed...and if you are hoping to meet after the elevator he is more into what people think of him as a person than about what he has accomplished.
7. Be yourself not a phony or a drama queen...remember what he said about that and 'girly girls'?
That is all I can think of for now...hope it helps !!

Aunt K, at 1/03/2005 6:11 PM
Wheeee! Aunt K, good to see you posting again. I hope you had a great holiday. And thanks for the tips, but I have a feeling I won't remember a single one of them when face to face with Pumkin. ;)

OK, then my Elevation flir..er.. speech was quite good!!
"I can't believe no one has said they'd ask for a hug or to kiss him on the cheek! I know some of you absolutely would. I might. ;)"
Michelle, that comes after the cup of coffee.... ;) No need to rush things
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 6:21 PM
Michelle, somehow I get the feeling that if you were caught in an elevator with Brendan you would come out of it with a pic, the Q&A, at the very least a hug, and probably his home address....but if he found out about your upcoming nuptuals (not sure of the spelling there...should I say wedding) and who the groom is...
lets just say that I dont that I am glad I am not in elevator with ya....
By
Aunt K, at 1/03/2005 6:35 PM
Does the admin of the blog at least get a hug? I'm not even asking to the address (although it wouldn't hurt)... just kidding.
And as for the wedding, I was hoping to bring him as my date... you'll see is all part of an eville plan the bridesmaids are working on
*Please contact you local bridesmaid for more info*
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 6:40 PM
Ooh, thanks for the great advice Aunt K. I'm one of the shyest people ever, so if I ever met Brendan and actually got some words out of my mouth, I hope I'd strike up a normal conversation. And start it out with "Hey Bren Bear!" Hee. I'd love to get a picture and a hug too! Le sigh.
By
Janine, at 1/03/2005 6:47 PM
Actually I know exactly what would happen if it were me and Bren in an elevator:
I would spend the entire elevator ride thinking, "Hmm, that looks a lot like Brendan Hansen. Nah, that can't be him. Well, maybe? Maybe that's him. No, probably not......I wonder if I should ask. OK, how to ask without sounding like a total idiot...excuse me, but are you Bren Bear? But then what if his name REALLY is Brendan Behr? Then what do I do? I don't know anyone named Brendan Behr, and I'd have to come up with some stupid story to cover my tracks and not seem like a stalker for some random guy in an elevator...."
And by the time I decided to brave it and ask, Bren would have already gotten off on his floor, and I'd be kicking myself the rest of the elevator trip.
By
JHD, at 1/03/2005 6:56 PM
Aunt K - They seem hell bent on marrying me off to Cheatajima but I don't understand it at all. I score much better with Aar Bear and have a 90% emotional connection with Bren Bear. Surely those to factors mitigate ANY unintentional connctions to dolphin boy. But they are being mean to me.
You can be sure that if it ever happened I'd use my proximity to Brendan's advantage. Maybe slip him some bad sushi.
By
Michelle, at 1/03/2005 7:32 PM
Ahhh If I were in an elevator with theToight Toiger.... hmmmm. Okay the first thing I would so is push the panic button! I know, you thought I would push the Emergency Stop button. Then he would push the panic button. I have thought about what would happen if he made eye contact ever and smiled at me. I have already decided I would say "Hello Tioger, Show me your Tatts!" and wink. And he would say "lala" and open his arms to me and we would hug and laugh. The ice would be broken at that point. If it was at swimming event I would tell him how great it was to see him swim in person. (Because I know it will be..Oh please Montreal...) If it was in a random place? Like I said he would have to make eye contact with me. Believe it or not I am a bit of a shy person and I have to be approached or else I don't talk to people. That even goes for my own clients. Growing up in Southern California you kind of learn to let people have thier privacy. But I don't know for sure if he has read any of my posts so I am not sure he would know me. And if I called him a Toiger he might give me a look that I never want to see on his face. Although I think he would laugh and get the "Goldmember" reference. So after that I would ask him if I could buy him a drink or something and ask him about the world since I have never traveled. People's travels have always really engaged me. As of this date I still don't have a passport. I would get around to asking him about his family since they close to my heart now too. IF he decided to continue the conversation I would not mention the tattoo again...until we said goodbye and then I would say, "I mean it.... I would really love to be one of the few people who have seen it." Then I would give him my card and tell him if he is ever in California I would love to shampoo him.... OOps I mean cut his hair and tell him to feel free to email me any time! I can't believe how hard that was to type ;)
By
lala, at 1/03/2005 7:37 PM
AUNT K....Your back!!!! Thanks for the tips...*starts to make a laminated "what to see if I meet Pumpkin card!"****
I would make it through OK! My only thing is, I would be mortified for the next couple of years. I embarrass really easy. I am still so embarrassed that I said hi to Aaron at worlds and asked for a picture. My face is all flushed now just thinking about it. AHHH! I swear all I said was "hi" and now I'm like "you idiot"(done in my best ren and stimpy voice!)So I don't know how I could cope with calling Brendan "pumpkin."
By
Kimberly, at 1/03/2005 7:49 PM
Ladies....please dont match our web admin with dolphin boy....she definitely deserves better from us....
think of the pics she got for you....besides if you think about it he's short...and a screamer (now I shouldnt go there but think about it on your own....can you imagine????)
By
Aunt K, at 1/03/2005 7:50 PM
Ladies, ladies, if you want to make the right impression, you don't need 2 minutes, let alone 3! Five seconds, that's it...You wait til he's nearly to his floor, then right before the doors open, in a low voice you say, "I have pictures of Cheatajima in women's underwear." That's all. And in 2 months, be sure to let us all know where you're registered for china.
By
Jane, at 1/03/2005 7:50 PM
Aunt K, are you making fun of Cheatascreama? ;-)
PS: I'm Kat, I'm new.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 7:53 PM
Kim- if you're going to make a "How to meet Brendan" card with K's suggestions, maybe someone could draw little diagrams like on the emergency cards in the back of airplane seats....
(Also trying not to choke on my ramen noodles while picturing dolphin boy in womens undies.)

Ahh Aunt K..... How sweet of you to stand up for poor MIchelle. I was just trying to make her feel better because she wasn't happy with her biolovematch. So I found someone that she is oh so compatable with. I had no idea such drama would ensue. ::blink blink:: And I am ever so thankful for all that MIchelle has done for us and Brendan too. Okay Meesh. I will be nice now.
By
lala, at 1/03/2005 8:17 PM
Welcome to bho Kat....glad that you are posting and another person to help hold signs which may get me out of doing it especially if the stands are shakey!!!
As you will learn with me, I dont make fun of people with the exception of myself....With dolphin boy I am merely stating facts...he is short and he is a screamer. Need I say more?
But I really like the name cheatascreama...very good !!
By
Aunt K, at 1/03/2005 8:17 PM
Aunt K, we were just trying to cheer Michelle up! If you could only see all the things we gathered together for her: lingerie, linens, all that and then furniture for the house, china, the place for the engagement party and the wedding, all the decorations. We put a lot of work into it... but if Michelle is having cold feets then I guess we should be nicer to her.
You know we lurve ya Meesh...
And the new nickname is priceless

Cheatascreama--- its a hybrid of an original nickname (Screamer Cheater) and Cheatajima. Glad you like it.
Christi- I don't dislike Jason exactly, in fact, I respect his swimming. He just wasn't the friendliest person to the volunteers in Indy. I'm sure he's an ok guy.
Aunt K- I'd help anyone hold signs...even though, I'm likely to be found volunteering for drug escorting at meets. I was telling the ladies last night that I had respected Brendan's swimming before, but his absolute kindness to the volunteers at the FINA World's made me a fan.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 8:36 PM
Aunt K,now all I have in my head is the whole screaming thing. Wouldn't that be embarassing on your honeymoon...lol. I will leave it there,Michelle,I promise. ;p Michelle, you can have Aaron instead okay.
Now if it came down to actually seeing Bren and talking to him...hmmmm. I would like to think I would be able to be all cool but I'm just so silly. Aunt K,I know you said not to look silly but I'm just that way naturally. I know for sure my face would get red because that just happens when I get nervous. The more I think about it the worse it gets. I would probally get out a decent conversation but I would also have to get a hug. I'm a hugger by nature and I just can't help myself. Have we heard anything else about WC?

A Tale of Two ElevatorsImaginary Elevator:
I'd say, "Hey, Brendan! How you doin'? My name is Angie. I sent you some mix CDs!"
And then we'd talk about music, and the little stick figure drawings I did on the liner notes.
Real Elevator:
I'd probably say nothing. I usually don't talk to *anyone* I don't know, because I'm shy and very introverted. Also kinda anti-social to the point where I don't like being bothered by strangers, and thus assume that no one else wants to be.
By

Way off topic, but does anyone know what's up with blogger erasing the paragraph break after HTML tags? I tried putting in the HTML for break, but that's apparently not accepted.

Lol...Atrophy,I wasn't invited to the wedding so I didn't know.
By
blairbecky, at 1/03/2005 9:47 PM
Aunt K---1) It's great to hear from you again and b) thanks for the tips.
I think even if I somehow managed to unstick my tongue from the roof of my mouth, complimented him on his accomplishments and got across that I frequent the board I'd end up walking out of the elevator, tripping, and falling flat on my face.
By
lizook12, at 1/03/2005 9:54 PM
Sorry Blair, you know atrophy gets Aaron... it's standard knowledge... that is until JHD shows up to fight her for it.
But who do you want to take to the wedding? I'll check if he's not taken.
Angie, you should def bring the CD's comment. He's gonna remember that for sure cause he did post that he liked them ;)
And girls, don't be shy, he's a person after all... he even eats pretzels
By

By
JHD, at 1/03/2005 10:04 PM
knowing my luck? I'd probably run into Brendan in the elevator after, like, going to the dentist or something. So I'd be all, "Haaa, Brendaaaaa." I'd scare him away before I even mentioned CDs. And I'd also be wearing my (Cute! Target!) pajamas.
Because that is how things ALWAYS work.
By

so everyone has to have a date now? who is not taken so far?Cant we all just bring Pumpkin? Im sure he wouldnt mind having 30 girls as his date. but then again i dont think he would want to see Cheatascreama! is that the new name now?
welcome Kat and Welcome BACK Aunt K.

Angie..I am pretty sure that I have Piety! Sorry..I would be willing to give you Pieter if I can have Phelps, Crockah, or Thorpedo.....how cool would it be to say "hello nice to meet you, do you know my husband the thorpedo?"
By

You know, I'm opretty sure I'm gonna babble in Spanish or something. With my luck...

Kim- You can take Thorpedo. I'll take Phelps.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:24 PM
Michelle can have Lenny.
I'm so sorry to do this, but once again, you need to find another. Lenny is mine! I can suggest another... How about Popov? He's a good one.
By
AimsRos, at 1/03/2005 10:25 PM
Authomatic response in lala's name. Thorpe is taken.
Hoogie was taken too by Ms of Arc.
Phelps is still available.
Michelle, can we get you Popov? Cause Crocker is taken too.
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 10:28 PM
Popov is a good one. During the Olympics I think I annoyed *everyone* I know by repeatedly saying, "In conclusion, Popov!"
...well, it amused *me*.
Since all the swimmers seem to be taken, I am herby laying my claim to Zach Braff.
By
Angie, at 1/03/2005 10:28 PM
Angie *curses*. you pulled the braff card. I should have thought of that earlier. *pouts out bottom lip*

I'm playing the "I live in Baltimore and I've got mutual friends with him card". Does that outrule seniority? If not, I'll lay claim to the entire Brazilian men's swim team.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:33 PM
LOL Kat - I liked your Cheatajima photo.
And if I can't have Brendan, Aaron or Crockah' then I guess Popov will do. He is closer to my age and genetically engineered for perfection.
By

omg! love the braff!
Sorry, I had to do that.

You get Phelps Monday night to Thursday morning, and I get him Thursday afternoon to Monday afternoon.

"Sorry Lena, darling lala is nowhere to be found, and I'm using my library card to claim Thorpe from the "Available" shelf."
Verbal, you really want to mess with lala? She's married to him, remember?
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 10:44 PM
I'm not good at sharing...but I appreciate the offer. I guess that since I live only 2 hours from U of M we could do that! I could be his school frolic and you could cover home base! OK that came off way worse then I intended!!!
By
Kimberly, at 1/03/2005 10:45 PM
Uh-oh, I see a fight coming on for Thorpe later.....
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:46 PM
Angie, please! Hugh Grant is one of my movie husbands. But I will gladly give him up if it means that I get to keep Aaron and Christian Bale.
(mmm, christian bale)

all this fighting over swimmers is exhausting. since a non-swimmer is being thrown into the mix (Zach braff) then ill claim another.
Tom Welling !..you know the guy who plays superman on Smallville. the show is kind of cheesy but i watch it for him.
oh and who claimed Brendan for a date?
By
jenny, at 1/03/2005 10:46 PM
If no one has claimed a swimmer and your choices are taken...don't forget the lovely men of the Brazilian Men's Swim Team. I really enjoyed watching them swim at the FINAs (and just watching them in general).
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:49 PM
oh and who claimed Brendan for a date?jenny, miss lena enchanted Brendan with her bow and arrow long ago.
By
afadingvoice, at 1/03/2005 10:50 PM
ha ha did someone forget to claim pumpkin....no Lena has him...does Stephie Mc get Sean...because I want him if not. Wait..can I claim Ben Michaelson? I love that guy...he is so nice!
By
Kimberly, at 1/03/2005 10:51 PM
Oh yeah! There's Ben Michaelson, Tom Dolan (even if he retired), and Tom Malchow.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:54 PM
The Handsome Brothers were taken by her legitimate future wives long ago-
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 10:55 PM
OK I've got Ben Michaelson...YEAH..I'm not a lonely loser...just a loser!
By
Kimberly, at 1/03/2005 10:55 PM
I won't but I don't think anyone is taking Ed Moses! HOT!!!!!!
By
Kimberly, at 1/03/2005 10:58 PM
Man, Ed IS hot! UVA's had a history of gorgeous swimmers.
By
Kat, at 1/03/2005 10:59 PM
Sorry Aimsros, didn't see that. Darn. Has anyone claimed Ry-Ry yet?
By
Janine, at 1/03/2005 10:59 PM
Janine, I'm so sorry, but we don't dare to break Ry Ry and Kai Kai... how about Markus?
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 11:03 PM
Hey, Zach Braff "swims" in Garden State. ...he's in a pool, at least!
:)
atrophy - Hugh Grant in About a Boy in those jeans? YUM.
By
Angie, at 1/03/2005 11:03 PM
Ooh, I forgot about Markus. Sure, I'll take him!
By
Janine, at 1/03/2005 11:06 PM
Angie - I think you mean "Hugh Grant in "About a Boy" period." Because, damn. That entire movie was sex on a stick.
By
a, at 1/03/2005 11:09 PM
It's totally the hair. He's so much better without the floppy mop. But man, he rocked the jeans in that movie. I think I have a thing for Brits in jeans. Cause Paul Bettany in Wimbledon? YUM.
Mmm...
What's the topic again? Brendan Hansen in an elevator? Maybe he could reenact the opening scene from Speed! I'd love him to rescue me from an insane bomber, wouldn't you?
By
Angie, at 1/03/2005 11:12 PM
Verbal, lala can't be here right now, so she asked the other bridesmaids to protect her Thorpey. Since he is unavailable, perhaps Grant might be to your liking?
By
AimsRos, at 1/03/2005 11:14 PM
It's the short hair, the jeans AND the accent.
Oh, right. Brendan. Yo, Brendan! Did you know you can't every fall in an elevator? There are breaks. So you don't have to fear about falling ten stories to the bottom because it can't happen!!
I'm such a barrel of laughs, I swear.
By
a, at 1/03/2005 11:15 PM
Hey, does anyone remember that episode of LA Law where Rosalind (I think that was her name, I can't remember exactly.) stepped into what she *thought* was an elevator and fell to her death because the elevator wasn't there and it was just an open shaft?
Hi everyone. I'm here to Bring the Fun. :)
By
Angie, at 1/03/2005 11:17 PM
On the other hand, there other things you can do in an elevator...
what?
You can talk in an elevator... or wasn't that what we were rehearsing for?
JHD, how about Mark Foster?
By
Lena, at 1/03/2005 11:18 PM
Angie, I TOTALLY DO. That's what I think EVERY TIME an elevator takes awhile to open. And then someone told me that that could never happen.
You + Me = Funner than Fun Twinz.

"Hoogie was taken too by Ms of Arc."
When did this happen? If anything, there's going to be big kerfuffle between atrophy, JHD, and I for the Aar-bear. I'm not saying I would mind Hoogie as my date, however.
