Wednesday Night Chat Recap
Compliments of the lovely Sarah (ICO!)
Joined by the Beautiful European Fans, Brendan appeared earlier than usual, as promised, allowing us all to be a bit more awake while listening to his little gems of wisdom
Daily Stuff:
Ok ladies, you know you want the dirt on Bren's Valentine's Day: nothing special. That's right Valentine's Day was much like any other day for him. Bren, I'm sure you would have had many volunteers to spend the day with if you had only asked ;)
The winner of the contest was announced to us, but only after extremely long unnecessary pauses from Brendan. The tease! Prizes are as follows:
Training:
Joined by the Beautiful European Fans, Brendan appeared earlier than usual, as promised, allowing us all to be a bit more awake while listening to his little gems of wisdom
Daily Stuff:
- While chatting Brendan was enjoying his dinner: a monster burrito, because after all he is a growing boy.
- Brendan is a messy eater. He dropped some burrito on his laptop, and then later when eating some mystery cookies, he got "crumbles everywhere"
- Brendan had an uneventful day. Uneventful for Bren means two workouts and a power nap
- Speaking of naps, Pumkin loves them; they are "a little piece of heaven during the day"
Ok ladies, you know you want the dirt on Bren's Valentine's Day: nothing special.
- Gold Medal: The Perfect Date (Bren's heart lies with Mandy)
- Silver Medal: The Haversomething Daily (according to Bren, second place needs not to worry because he's come in second before and "second isn't that bad" That's ok Bren, I like silver better anyway)
- Bronze Medal: The Sun is Hot and so are you..
Training:
- Bren trains twice a day, once at 5am and then again at 3. He does this six days a week: every day except for Sunday.
- He doesn't just swim, Bren also lifts weights. Yeah, like 265 pounds of them.
- Other than swimming, how does he train? Bren does core training, such as yoga. This means he is pretty flexible. Ladies, get your minds out of the gutter!
- Best advice his mom has ever given him: He will know when he meets the girl he is going to marry because he will have no doubt in his mind about it.
- He really admires his sister. She has had to follow in his footsteps all of her life and is still a shining star. (Note: We admire her too; those are some pretty amazing steps to follow)
- The reason he had to leave us all was because his sister called him. Come on, let's say it together, "Awwwwe"
- The craziest thing one of his fans has done is make a website for him. Gee, I wonder who he is talking about there?
- Brendan fans must be the most vocal at the Short Course Championships in Austin in March. We must show those Phelps fans where it's really at. Or as Bren puts it, "we need to be able to compete with the Phelps legion." Good luck to the girls who do go, we are counting on you!
- Brendan will be competing "all days" of the Short Course Championships, although he's not sure yet as to which events.
- Where has he felt the most pressure in competition? Well, the Olympics, duh! "You are behind the blocks thinking if I screw this up I have 3 years to think about it."
- At the World Championship Trials in Indy Brendan will be swimming the 100 and 200 breast, skipping out on the IM, and "of course the relay"
- In Athens, the coaches put the best guy in the medley relay. End of story. Thank you Brendan.
- Brendan has never swum a 1000 breast stroke and timed himself. That's just crazy, yo.
- Don't ask Brendan to choose between swimming as part of a relay or an individual event. They are both different experiences, and he loves them both equally.
- The burning question: Ashlee or Jessica Simpson? Bren likes Ashlee better, because he likes brunettes.
- Does Brendan suffer from narcolepsy? No, but he does fall asleep in class sometimes (who doesn't?). Oh, yeah he also twitches when he falls asleep in class. One time while sleeping he hit the girl next to him. She woke him up with her screaming, but Bren had been sleeping so had no idea why she was so upset
- Once again, Brendan has confirmed the fact that he doesn't use pick up lines. Accept it ladies, he's just not that sleazy.
- Bren doesn't have a preference as to what a girl's perfume smells like, "but it has to smell good. Not like cowpies" Thanks for all the detailed help Pumkin.
- I mentioned he is a mess, right? Brendan says that he needs a maid. Applicant line starts to the right.
- "Slurpees rule"
- Brendan shoots using his right hand. He is also still convinced he could beat Lena in archery. I'd so pay to watch that.
- Bren has no commercials or photo shoots coming up at the moment "but you never know" *goes off to write letter to Nike*
- Oh, the heart that Brendan has. The reason he is involved in Leukemia research is because of a hospital visit he once made. Brendan went to a children's hospital in Austin and saw all the sick kids. He was pretty upset about it, and decided that he wanted to do something about it. Heart of gold, that boy.

I'm behind a ruthless firewall,so havin a look at 'Who's chatting' was as close as I could get last night ... *sigh*...

Great recap Sarah, it was a good night! Shame I had to leave when I did, damn you uni work!!
By
Poppy, at 2/17/2005 4:33 AM
Pooh, lovely recap. You have such a great way with words.
Chat was really fun last night and Brendan is still dreaming in his class if the thinks he can beat me in archery.
But it was fun chatting with you all and Pumkin, don't worry. The Texas Legion of BHO was already alerted of their duties for the Short Course Championships, and I'm currently working on the Indy Legion.
(pst You can track my ancesters back to the Roman empire, can't you tell?)

Thanks for the recap Sarah! I thought I was missing most of it (Sorry Bren, but Lost takes priority), especially with me being stuck in the revolving door. Who thought that a revolving door would look nice on a chatroom? Eville, is this your doing?? ;)
And thanks Bren for picking our valentine as one of the winners! I like bronze. So are you going to give me my medal (for my team) in Indy?

Blogger hates me again. =(
Sarah - Great recap. As always, you rawk!
JHD - The team is counting on you to collect our prize! ;)

(Seriously, I hate Blogger.)
I just have to say this: Does Brendan realize that Ashlee is actually a blonde?
By
a, at 2/17/2005 11:09 AM
Ellie, congrats! *Hugs* I already gave Terrie and Janine one but that was during the chat so there is no telling if y'all saw it. So I guess that means *Group Hug*. Heehee...
Sarah, wonderful recap. I missed the whole eating and napping part of the chat. If I did as much as Bren did in a day I would love naps too. ;)

I'm going to refrain from posting something here that will get me kicked off of this blog... but you should know that some of what happened last night offended people who were in the chat. You all seem to forget that not everyone who comes here is ONLY a Brendan fan.
By
Insane Reason, at 2/17/2005 12:45 PM
Thanx for the recap, Sarah! Yay, we got bronze! Thank you, Brendan! Congratulations to gold, silver and every other team. The competition was great and fun, and most important, it was dolphin free. ;-)
JHD, while collecting the prize, make some photos, so it'll be official. :-)

thanks for the recap
the thing about the twitching while sleeping, i do that too. i fell asleep in the back of a van once and i woke up with everyone staring at me cause i was twitching. lol i dont think i've ever made anybody scream because i hit them though. haha
By
Cait, at 2/17/2005 3:09 PM
Great job Sarah. Chat was a lot of fun last night. And congrats to the winners of the Valentines contest. I've got some autographed photos for everyone and I'm trying to think of something else good to go with them. Any suggestions?
insanereason - I'm not going to ban someone for having an differing opinion. I don't recall seeing you in the chat last night, but next time feel free to speak up. I've been told some Phelps fans feelings were hurt last night, not necessarily by anything that Brendan said but by some comments made by other chatters. I'm sure that wasn't the intent and I'll ask people to be more careful with their characterizations in the future and remember that Brendan fans can also be Phelps fans and Hoogie fans and Thorpe fans, etc.
By
Michelle, at 2/17/2005 3:14 PM
Sarah thanks for recapping the chat. And Bren-a HUGE thank you to you for taking time from your busy schedule to chat with us, its nice to see someone who appreciates their fans as much as you seem to do.
By

Just had to add that chat was a blast last night...big thumbs up to everyone. =)
I shouldn't be too picky about chat being an hour earlier since I live on the East Coast, lol, but it was nice.
Brendan, are you sure that you don't need a tutor in Spanish?? heheh Face it, you're going to need a translator when (or if) you go back to Spain, ;).
By
Maria, at 2/17/2005 3:29 PM
Brendan, are you sure that you don't need a tutor in Spanish?? heheh Face it, you're going to need a translator when (or if) you go back to Spain, ;). Maria, nena, if that is the case, that position has been filled. ;)
And of course, I echo Michelle's feelings on the subject.

Lena, at 2/17/2005 4:06 PM
It's cute how you left out about Brendan's unsportsman like attitude towards a fellow team mate.
By

Thanks guys! I tried my best. :P
Again, a big congrats to everyone who won, and did, the Vday contest. They were all awesome.
Meesh-the pictures sound like a good idea as prizes. how about adding in something like, oh hot swimmers on our doorsteps? please?
haha, I kid. Other than that I got nothing at the moment. I'll get back to you if I think of anything

(blogger is being a little temperamental, isn't it...?)
Hi! I just wanted to say thanks to Brendan and Michelle for the chat last night. Sarah, thanks too for the recap! I wasn't able to be there, but I logged in, captured it and read it this morning. Looking forward to the Lena & Brendan archery event... :-)
By
ahoymatey, at 2/17/2005 4:42 PM
Snag - I don't remember seeing you here before. Welcome to the blog. We're you in the chat last night? If that was the case: could you please tell me what Brendan said that was so unsportsmanslike?
Looking over the transcript I could not find anything that I would consider to be insulting to Phelps.
I'm sure you don't pretend to make Brendan responsible of what some of his followers might have said in the heat of the moment. We're sorry if someone was offended but we're working on making this a better enviroment for all. Thanks for taking your time and add to it
By
Lena, at 2/17/2005 4:47 PM
Here's the thing, everyone:
Michelle doesn't have to be doing this. Michelle doesn't have to pay money to set up a BHO chat for people talk to Brendan an each other in. Michelle doesn't have to spend hours a day updating the blog, collecting goodies for everyone to enjoy, setting up contest, etc etc. Michelle doesn't have to do any of this.
What she has tried, very successfuly, I may add, to do is create a community, of swimfans, Brendan fans, etc alike. She's never been anything but approachable to everyone on this board and if you have a problem with something that is said here, the least you can do is contact Michelle about it before putting all your dirty laundry out.
I'm not defending any comment that may or may not have been said about another swimmer. I'm not defending anything Brendan may or may not have said. All I'm saying is to have a little class and respect for someone who's spent so much time trying to create a community for everyone.
By
a, at 2/17/2005 5:17 PM
Thank you Lena, well said. It seems to me the folks most upset with what was said in chat last night weren't even there. I think perhaps they are getting misinformation somewhere else.

Thanks Atrophy.
By
Michelle, at 2/17/2005 5:34 PM
Amen Atrophy. I couldn't have said it better myself. Meesh is the woman! I'm so appreciative for all she does with the site, as should you all.
*puffs out chest and crosses arms*
By
afadingvoice, at 2/17/2005 5:46 PM
Yes, well said atrophy. I probably don't say it enough, but I'm very thankful for this site and all the hard work you put into it Michelle. You've done a wonderful job. You can't please everyone, but we know you try your best!
As for the chat, I don't remember anyone saying anything offensive about Phelps. If it did happen, I'm sure it was in a playful/friendly competitive sense and we just wanted to show Brendan our support.
By
Janine, at 2/17/2005 6:19 PM
Thanks for the Sarah, it was nice for the highlights since Ii was passed out sick on my bed at the time. *mutters* Seventh graders had to go and give me their cold the first week of student teaching *end mutter*
Anyhow, thanks again. Hopefully, I'll make a chat one of these weeks...

Wow!..good job Kimberly. i feel the same way.
Like Lena and Michelle said everyone has a right to their own opinion BUT...we can't forget that a lot of us are a fan of a lot of swimmers in addition to Brendan. Have your opinion but I think we should try to keep the criticism to a minimum because that isnt what this site is about. Its about everyone coming together to talk about Brendan and how great he is and how talented and everything that is going on with him...haha.
you do a great job michelle and this site has given me a chance to become a huge fan of not only Brendan but the sport of swimming itself. Meeting everyone here has been awesome and so much fun and i want it to continue to be a blast
as for any comment brendan might have made i think some have misunderstood what he meant. he simply wanted supporters in march when he races phelps which us austinites are sooo going to do!!
catch y'all later...HOOK 'EM
By
jenny, at 2/17/2005 7:04 PM
I simply stated my opinion on the topic at hand. I'm sorry that some of you classify that as being classless, but if you knew what I was really thinking at the time you would be amazed at my self control. And why should I hide my opinion from the rest of the people on this board? If you are so community oriented then when something like this happens you should want the entire community to know about it, to be aware that what they are doing is offensive, so that they can take responsibility for their actions.
My only intention in the first place was to let you know that some people were very unhappy about comments made in the chat and they didn't want to say anything about it, for various reasons. I know that this is a Brendan fan site but respecting the other swimmers, especially his team mates, and their fans should be a no brainer. Whether the offensive comments came from Brendan himself or from other posters, they shouldn't have happened at all.
I haven't just come here to cause trouble but I know that nothing good is going to come out of this situation so I'm going to drop the subject.

...in addition to what i said earlier (sorry i forgot some things)
1. talking about other swimmers on the site is sometimes unavoidable especially if a big meet is coming up or Bren mentions one of his friends. Thats why we have to be respectful of other swimmers and remember that Bren is friends with a lot of them.
2. I understand a lot of people didnt appreciate the phelps comments last night which is understandable. Like i said everyone has their opinion but its not in good taste to develop a whole conversation about what you dont like about a certain swimmer when the point of the chat is to talk about Brendan
3. Insane REason..i dont think Kimberly meant to suggest that you were classless. she told me she was actually agreeing with you how the comments should stop. Of course you should state how you feel. that is what the Blog is for. but if we could keep the criticism to a minimum we wont have to have discussions about people being offended...i think someone posted earlier that someone conveniently left out that bren dissed a swimmer. i think we need to be careful of making accusations like that...
sorry this was so long just had to get my opinion out there...
to end on a good note...PUMKIN RULES!!
By
jenny, at 2/17/2005 7:40 PM
Jenny - I wasn't refuring to Kimberly's post... it was someone elses... I hadn't seem Kimberly's post until after I tried posting mine the first time. Blogger is evil today. Yeesh! lol

You are so right Kimmy! We really shouldn't hate on drunk drivers, especially when they are so CUTE!Sorry if the talk offended anyone, but drunk driving offends me, as does somebody trying to make light of such an irresposible act. The subject just happened to come up. When things happen they tend to be talked about. If he didn't want people to talk about it, then he should never have driven drunk. Please do not tell me that everybody makes mistakes, or anything like that. Kindergarteners know how wrong it is to drive drunk, and so should a nineteen year old. I am a huge Phelps fan, but that does not mean I will make excuses for him. Seeing as this is a site for our dear friend Pumkin, I promise to no longer bring the subject up, but I felt that I should say something.

great recap sarah, even though i already told you that. =D
the chat last night was another good one. thanks for chatting with us as always, bren! CONGRATS to everyone who won and participated in the v-day projects.
great posts, deena and kimberly. and michelle, even though everyone has already said their thing, i just want to let you thank you for everything that you have done for this site, us, and brendan. without this, i would not have met some of the most amazing people... or brendan, and i just want to thank you for that. =D
By
erin, at 2/17/2005 10:18 PM
Hmm...well, I'm a Phelps fan--about the biggest one there is, although lately Ian C has been creeping up my swimmer guy list--and I wasn't insulted by what Brendan said (at least not according to what was posted in the recap.) As far as Brendan taking on Michael in the IM, I'm sure it'll be a good race, and be good for swimming in general--Michael *wants* to be challenged, and if Brendan's gonna step up, I'm sure Michael is really excited about it. The breaststoke is Michael's weakest stroke, so Brendan is really going to push him there, and Michael just feeds off of that. In fact, I'd bet he's getting bored with the IM's (especially the 200) because he just hasn't had a challenge before, and now he does. And props to Brendan for stepping up and taking on something new to challenge himself with.
But, it sounds from the blog comments like others were upset that other chatters were trashing Michael after the chat (Brendan's portion) ended, and not with anything Brendan said. Which sucks if that happened(and I don't know that it did, cause I wasn't there) but I know everyone has their own opinion of the guy, so both sides should try to remember that. For example, ican'tswim has an opinion very different from mine. I can forgive Phelps for screwing up because (if I can rip off BTVS for a moment) forgiveness is an act of compassion--it's not done because people deserve it. It's done because people need it. So that poster and I have very different opinions on the matter, but hopefully both opinions can co-exist peacefully in the world, or at the very least in this corner of the internet.
That said, keep your chin up Michelle! You've done a great job with the site, and in the end, that's what matters. There's no way to make everyone happy with the site, so all you can do is what makes *you* happy with the site.
Sorry to go on so long--JHD suggested I pop over and then I just kind of went off rambling! :D
By
Shannen, at 2/17/2005 10:43 PM
Shannen,so nice to see you and you should come over more often..heehee.
Talking about Bren competing in IM has gotten me all excited. Is anyone taking a video camera to this event? I love watching Bren do the breaststroke because it's just pure poetry but I would also love to see him do all the other strokes. I'm totally not biased when it comes to Bren swimming. Let's see it all.
Have I said lately how hot Bren is?? :P
Just checking.

What a rollercoaster week this has been. I just want to remind everyone that this site is fun. That the chats are a gift from Michelle and Brendan. And can never be expected. As one of the people who has been present at all chats, I want to tell everyone that I am always suprised and honored when Brendan shows up. I am also honored by the other bloggers that show up. This is not a press conference. It is "chat". Chat: To converse in an easy, familiar manner; talk lightly and casually.
It is fun it is not serious and it should be veiwed as just light easy chat. Most of the people are here to get a little silly, funny talk, with a funny, generous man. Michelle as always I thank you for this site. And I thank you for allowing people with different opinions to post here.
And look! I made it all the way through this post without mentioning the longhorn tattoOOps.. Sorry.
By
lala, at 2/18/2005 4:26 AM
This past week has obviously been a learning experience (I hope) for everyone on the blog from Giz links to chat hijinks. What I would like to say is that Micheele works so damn hard on the site and it's really unappreciative to blast her efforts. She is doing the best that she can. Unfortunately she can't police people's thoughts before they put them down and quite frankly, she shouldn't have to. We're supposed to be using the inner filter y'all. If you think that it could really offend someone think about not putting it out there or maybe even try to rewrite it a more diplomatic and less attacking/abrasive manner.
And BTW Meesh, trolls are a sign of a successful blog.
By
Dana, at 2/18/2005 5:21 AM
Hi Guys...glad the blogger is letting me post now.
First...thanks Sarah for a great recap. While I don't like to chat on Wed nights, I do like to read what went on.
Secondly, for you Phelps fans. You might be interested to know that in Long Beach, before trials began, I asked Bren about Phelps. His response was that "He is awesome!".
Next, as for the relay...It was gracious for Michael to give up his being considered for the relay. He knew the ultimate decision was with the coaches. And while he did beat Ian in the hundred fly (by hundreths of a second), he knew that Ian was a better relay swimmer (better starts, more experience) and that that could account for tenths of a second in the time. Ian probably would have been selected by the coaches for this reason.
Finally, while all of us may have our favorite swimmers, I think we all should continue to celebrate the men's team as a whole. The US men right now are unbeatable.
Michelle, many kudos I see posted for you and for good reason. You tackled a growing website and worked hard to accomodate everyone along the way. Brendan is lucky to have such a great site manager, along with your assistants Lena and lala. Thanks for all you do ladies...have a great weekend!
By
Aunt "C", at 2/18/2005 9:58 AM
Don't let any of this get you down Michelle! Obviously you do this because you want to and for us -- couldn't be more happy with everything you have done. Of course learn from the mistakes (hey no one is perfect) and just let some of this "stuff" roll off your back! Love you tons! <333 and thank you so much =)
By
Kim, at 2/18/2005 10:42 AM
Excellent posts atrophy, Janine, Kimberly, Jenny, Shannen, lala, Dana, and Aunt C (So,so happy to see you!)
I personally looked over a capture of the chat and saw nothing negative towards any other swimmers. The only negative comment I saw was towards the press. (And let's be honest, the press is constantly deserving of criticism coughpaulhammcontroversycough)
The chat room attached to this site is a vehicle for us to chat with Brendan when his schedule allows. Michelle has kindly left the room open for use 24/7. It is unreasonable to expect that the conversation in the room is always going to focused on Brendan when he is not around. It would be nice if everyone tried to be constructive in their crticisism of other swimmers and it would be wonderful if we all recognized that we are all swimming fans, even if we have different favorites, but this is not an ideal world. There will be people who will say things to get a rise out of others, to be cruel, or without thinking through it clearly. However, any comments made are those of the people participating in the chat room. If you do not agree with them, hold them responsible for it and take issue with them. To blame Brendan, Michelle, the admins, or anyone other than the person making the comment is not only irresponsible, it is not fair.
During the chats with Brendan, there is always at least one admin present. If you click on their name you can send them a private message and if something that was said offended you, they can take care of it. That's what they are there for. The admins have done a great job of trying to keep the room on topic during chats with Brendan present and I applaud them for their efforts. (You ladies rawk!!)
With that said, it saddens me that this site has gotten somewhat ugly. I am with lala, this site has always been fun and lighthearted and I hope it will be again.
For the record: I think Phelps is amazing. He is not one of my favorites, but I think he is so talented and is only going to get better in the years to come. I am looking forward to seeing him race in some pretty "Sick" relays down the road.
Michelle - I know I've said it before, but let me join the Michelle love fest and say thank you for everything you do. You do a terrific job even though you don't have to and even though we will never be worthy.
*does Wayne & Garth's "We're Not Worthy! We're Not Worthy" chant* ;)
P.S. Brendan is HOT, like the sun ;) hahaha coughandihavenotforgottenyoueithercutiemchottiecough
Darn that coughchatdiseasecough

Okay, everyone,I'm going to throw out a *Group Hug* to everyone. That includes bloggers, admins, the Hansen family and all swimmers.
All I ask is that I get to be in the middle...lol. :P
I love you all and I hope that this week is the worst week we all have here. I guess sometimes you have to have the downs to appreciate the ups.
As I've said before "Michelle is queen" and everyone soundly agreed.
XOXOXO and then some :D

I too was present in the chat on Wednesday evening, using a different name, for reasons I will reference later. While I was reading all of the posts/comments, I do not recall any reference made by Brendan which was derogatory towards a fellow teammate. I recall him speaking about Michael’s fan base and how many of them would be present at the next meet and when he referenced Ian regarding his performance in the medley relay, neither of which could be construed as ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’. If you knew my nephew, as I do, you would know he would never make a derogatory comment about any of his fellow teammates, whether it had to do with their performance at a meet or in their personal lives. Actually, in all of years Brendan has been competing, I have never read an article, comment, or any other media format which associated Brendan with ‘unsportsmanlike’ conduct. Brendan has always taken great pride in representing this country and as far as his family is concern, we have been proud of the manner in which he has conducted himself both in and out of the media. If ‘snag’ is referencing comments/posts by another person, he/she should state what they found offensive and by whom. Making statements, even on website blog, can have an impact, on individual/individuals which may have adverse affects. My suggestion, address the issue. State your opinion, reference how you formed said opinion and let’s have a healthy debate and discuss the situation.
Michelle, as I stated to you in an email earlier this week, thank you for taking into consideration my thoughts and feelings as well as my family members. Your integrity came shining through. While some may not know this, there were forces at work this past week which tried to test a developing friendship causing an enormous amount of undue stress. I am not sure what they hoped to gain but please know they failed. Growth, at times, can be a painful experience but as a result of the experience you gain strength. Here’s to a strong and lasting friendship....cheers.

Thank you for the recap, Sarah! I wasn't able to be in the chat on Wednesday because my stupid computer broke down. Reading the comments here, it looks like the whole thing has been blown out of proportions. I think everyone has uttered their opinions about it, how about letting it drop now? We should rather focus on the positive things, like everything Michelle is doing for us at BHO, and that Brendan is really great for coming to the chat and talk with us, and that we are an amazing bunch of people who have a lot of love to share. :)
