Kitajima fails to qualify for 200m Breast

Kosuke Kitajima suffered a shock defeat while Ai Shibata cruised to her first national title as the Olympic champions had mixed fortunes on the opening day of the national swimming championships Thursday.

Kitajima, who won a breaststroke double in Athens last summer, finished third in the men's 200 meters behind Genki Imamura and Daisuke Kimura, and failed to win a place for the discipline in the world championships to be held in Montreal in July.

Imamura, who trailed Kitajima by 0.07 second at the halfway mark, touched the wall at Yokohama International Swimming Pool in 2 minutes, 11.70 seconds. Kimura overtook Kitajima down the final stretch to finish runner-up in 2:13.02, 0.24 second ahead of Kitajima.

Imamura and Kimura met the qualifying standard set by the Japan Swimming Federation and secured spots in the world championships.

"People say no one can beat Kitajima in Japan and it has frustrated me a lot," Imamura said. "Kosuke had more strokes than usual in his qualifying heat and I thought it wasn't his usual race and the chance has come to me."

"I believed that I'd be able to beat him if the race came down to a duel in the final 100 meters, and I thought I could make it the moment I made the halfway turn," said Imamura, who became the first Japanese to beat Kitajima in five years.

Kitajima did not hide his disappointment and said he will make a fresh start for the 50 and 100 meters to be contested later in the championships.

"I screwed it and I'm disappointed," Kitajima said. "I didn't have the strength to keep the momentum throughout the 200 meters. I have more races left and I'm ready to make a switch for better results."

Freestyle swimmer Shibata, gold medalist in Athens in the women's 800 meters, ended the six-year reign of Sachiko Yamada in the 400 as she held off her Olympic team rival by more than 3 seconds to claim her first national crown in 4:07.93.

Yamada, who holds the national record of 4:07.23, finished second in 4:11.37.

"You can't be satisfied with just the Olympic gold and I swam as if I were a challenger," Shibata said. "I'm disappointed that I was unable to break the national record, but I got a confidence boost with my first victory swimming alongside Yamada."

Shibata qualified for the world championships along with Maiko Fujino, who won the women's 400-meter individual medley in 4:41.96 for her first national title in two years and second overall.

In other races, Daisuke Hosokawa took the men's 100-meter freestyle in 50.47 and Megumi Taneda emerged victorious in the women's 200-meter breaststroke in 2:28.62.

  • Wow! this is shocking..........calling Brendan now.
Michelle, you are unbelievable with your updates, faster than anything I witnessed.
    Montreal is looking better everyday!

By Blogger Mrs. H, at 4/21/2005 11:59 AM

  • Heh. I'm sure Bren will be disappointed because now he won't get to prove he's the better swimmer to Kitajima by swimming against him directly.

But that doesn't matter, because we all know the better swimmer is Bren anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

By Blogger JHD, at 4/21/2005 12:00 PM

  • mrs h. i would have loved to see your face when you heard this news. i wonder what the rest of the family thinks?
it is very surprising...but, if they(those crazy scientists in Japan) were fooling around with his stroke or whatever - it actually doesnt surprise me.
it just proves that bren is just a naturally better swimmer, and science cant and shouldnt mess with that stuff, you either have it or you dont. bren has it, kitajima obviously did not.

JHD - I agree bren might be a little disappointed, but that wont last long. In the world of swimming there is always an up-and-comer, or always someone who might come out of nowhere...he'll bring his best game no matter who he swims against.

KK still may make the 100...which means there is still a chance I will be kicked out/thrown in jail in montreal.

    By Blogger swimphilly78, at 4/21/2005 12:18 PM

  • Oh man...on the day that I decide that I'm like 75-80% sure I'm gonna go to Montreal, this happens--I was looking forward to seeing Brendan non-dolphin kick Kitajima's butt!

But maybe he'll qualify for the 50 or 100, and Bren will still get his chance.

By Blogger Shannen, at 4/21/2005 12:19 PM

  • swimphilly -- I never meant to suggest Brendan would bring anything less than his best to a race. I know better than that. If my comment comes across that way, then I'm sorry.

I also know that when I asked Bren in an earlier chat if there was he looked forward to racing besides Kitajima this year, his response was "No one."

By Blogger JHD, at 4/21/2005 12:24 PM

  • Wow... that... well... dang...

I really don't know how to feel about this... I mean, in my mind at least, Brendan was/is always going to win...

By Blogger Jaclyn, at 4/21/2005 12:25 PM

  • Darn Kitajima's hide....this sucks.

And that's all I've got to say about that. :(

By Blogger blairbecky, at 4/21/2005 12:25 PM

  • JHD- nooooooo absolutely no it didnt come across as anything... i'm so sorry! i just told michelle i reread my post - this is why i need to take a breath before posting, i was all riled up.
you know what it is, i think i just read one too many articles implying that its not going to be a decent race unless bren and kitajima face off. which is partially true i guess.
i do understand what you mean though...

    By Blogger swimphilly78, at 4/21/2005 12:33 PM

  • Well, I would liked to have seen them go head to head, but I won't miss seeing Cheatajima's wild eyes. They give me the heebeejeebees. He may still make the 50 and 100. We'll find out Saturday and Sunday. Anyone who'd like to follow along can thank Blair for this link...

  • swimphilly -- No worries. It's all good. =)

By Blogger JHD, at 4/21/2005 12:35 PM

  • It just proves to the rest of the world that Brendan is the best....like we didn't already know!

By Blogger Poppy, at 4/21/2005 12:36 PM

  • Interesting news. I wonder if he missed his taper. When they pick up stroke rate like that in prelims, a lot of the time it's because they're tired and the panic of trying to compensate compresses their stroke. Tom Wilkins used to be like that. I also wonder about his turns. If he used to pick up acceleration with the illegal kick, he could be really flat now that he has to consciously stop himself from doing it. I wish they had a video of this race posted somewhere.

I guess Kitajima got a taste of what it was to have to qualify under tough conditions, turn around and swim hard again 3 months later. Hmm, sounds an awful lot like US Trials/Athens. The difference is, Brendan put down world record times under those conditions.

In high school there was this girl who was #2 in my class, smart, but not likable, and she always gave off the impression that she cut corners. If I was up against her in anything, I used the competitive energy to add that last dollop of frosting to my cupcake of motivation. (ha) But I still gave it everything I had every time, regardless. If you like to win, you like to win, and the competition really doesn't matter. There's a great quote about this, I have it on my wall at work: "every day you don't give 100%, you sacrifice the gift."

JHD - other Dana :) - I think Lynea made reference to the cupcake of motivation :) but we all know that Brendan is not the type to ever sacrifice the gift. I don't care if he's racing the Lakeland Hills YMCA 8-and-under team. (I just saw those kids last weekend and they were SO CUTE. It reminded me of the original love for swimming, all of those little belly floppers with big goggles)

SO who will Brendan look for now in that race? I think Usher qualified, right ... Vlad ... Gyurta ... Piper if he can manage not to repeat that DQ problem

By Blogger Dana Cara, at 4/21/2005 12:45 PM

  • Has anyone heard how little Gyurta is swimming these days?

By Blogger Michelle, at 4/21/2005 12:49 PM

  • Not a clue! Good que, though. They're playing FINA races just about every day on CSTV, and Piper just keeps on DQing and DQing

By Blogger Dana Cara, at 4/21/2005 12:57 PM

  • I'm more curious as to how Lazlo Czeh is doing. (SNERK OMG KIDDING!)

But yeah, this is big news. Mrs H., how did Brendan take it?

    By Blogger a, at 4/21/2005 12:57 PM

  • Wow! that was the last thing I expected to see today.

Like others have said Bren may be disappointed but it just goes to show that trash talk gets you nowhere and Brendan has the upper hand on Class and Talent..

By Blogger jenny, at 4/21/2005 12:58 PM

  • I am sure Kitajima will do the 100 and 50.
Dana Cara you have a great insight as most of the conclusion the girls wrote here.

Swimphilly, my face was like....Am I reading this right????????? His time in finals does not appear to be a tapered time. Did he taper? Or is he just out of shape?

By Blogger Mrs. H, at 4/21/2005 1:05 PM

  • It appears he's just out of shape - Another article that I don't have a link to...

Kitajima beaten at nationals, misses world swimming 200m championships

Athens Olympic dual gold medallist Kosuke Kitajima surprisingly finished third in the men's 200-metre breaststroke at the national championships on Thursday, missing out on the world swimming championships.

Kitajima, also the 100m and 200m world champion at Barcelona in 2003, managed to clock two minutes 13.26 seconds finishing behind Genki Imamura in 2:11.70 and Daisuke Kimura in 2:13.02.

The top two swimmers, who cut the qualification time, automatically qualified for the world championships to be held in Montreal on July 24-31.

"I must accept that this is my current form. My physical condition was poor and I couldn't train enough to swim 200 metres," said the former world record holder from Tokyo.

"I was very disappointed, because I thought my swimming itself was not so bad. But I still have a chance in the 50 and 100 metres. I must take this defeat as a stepping stone and refresh myself for my next race."

Meanwhile, a jubilant Imamura said: "I saw Kosuke in his best form at the Olympics and I thought it would be very difficult to win the national championships because of him, but I kept thinking about beating him some day."

"I knew he was not in good form ... and this was a rare chance to beat him. A win is a win ... My goal is to win the gold at the Beijing Olympics," he added.

Kimura said: "I hadn't expected Genki to beat Kosuke, so I tried to finish second by beating Genki. When I was beaten by Genki, I thought I missed the worlds. When I found I finished second, I was very, very surprised."

Athens Olympic women's 800m freestyle champion Ai Shibata and Maiko Fujino joined them in the world championships.

Shibata timed 4:07.93 to capture her first national title beating five-time defending champion Sachiko Yamada into second in 4:11.37 and Yumi Kida third in 4:14.53.

Fujino defended the women's 400m individual medlay title by clocking 4:41.96 to beat Aiko Morishita and Misa Amano.

In other finals, Daisuke Hosokawa won his second straight men's 100m freestyle in 50.47, while Ryo Takayasu timed 24.17 to regain the men's 50m butterfly title he won two years ago.

Ayako Doi posted her first victory in the women's 50m butterfly in 27.39, while Megumi Taneda also won her first women's 200m breaststroke in 2:28.62.

By Blogger Michelle, at 4/21/2005 1:11 PM

  • OMG!

And how funny is it that the song I am listening to while reading this is Karma by Alicia Keys..

*sings really badly off key* "What goes around comes around.."

By Blogger Kimberly, at 4/21/2005 1:24 PM

  • This is indeed SHOCKING news. Although I wondered what would happen now that there would be added focus on his turns and kick off the walls. He is probably learning who to do his pullouts all over again...LEGALLY this time.

I agree with all thats been said..Brendan will still bring his game face bc there is always someone new to race....also we are looking for a best time no matter who the comp is. :o)

DC: Ive been watching that channel. I LOVE it, and not just for the swimming, I enjoy watching all the other sports. (especially the lacrosse) I really like the commercials too. The one where the dad is wanting the little boy to go pro...it's GREAT, but back to your comment about Piper. Seriously when is he going to learn?

By Blogger Kate, at 4/21/2005 1:34 PM

  • It just goes to show that you can never get cocky and think that you the greatest. Every time you go out you have to go for the personal best. And tell the clock that you can beat it. I have read alot of quotes from WR holding swimmers that say [that] the only real victory is the one against the clock. Thar they could win the race but still not feel victorious. I never really understood that. It seemed to me that if you won, you won. As much as it would seem difficult to feel like pushing when you are body lengths ahead of the competition, you are always chasing your personal best time. And then if you get ahead of it, you cant let it psych you out and take the lead. It is a tough concept, but I am starting to get it. I have seen the virtual WR line cutting the pool and I have seen people fight to pass get ahead of it just to have that line catch themand out touch them to the wall. I guess therein lies the "real" battle. Few come even close to ever reaching, not to mention passing that virtual line.

By Blogger lala, at 4/21/2005 1:43 PM

  • This is a VERY surprising but we all know it wouldn't matter if he qualified for the 200 or not.. Bren still would have beaten him!

By Blogger Christi, at 4/21/2005 1:44 PM

  • cheater cheater pumpkin eater,
learned his lesson by not qualifying for worlds in montreal in 200 breast...er

By Blogger Anna, at 4/21/2005 2:42 PM

  • Ladies and gentlemen.. may i present the word of the day..... KHARMA!

But i'm pretty sure bren will get his chance to beat chetajima in the 100m breastroke... and he'll do it FABULOUSLY!!!

By Blogger caity, at 4/21/2005 2:51 PM

  • Anna - YOU CRACK ME UP!

By Blogger Michelle, at 4/21/2005 2:59 PM

  • Karma, poetic justice, call it the name you want it, this just proves taht you always have to work for it.

    There's still a chance for the 50 or 100.

By Blogger Lena, at 4/21/2005 3:07 PM

  • WOW!! What a sweeet article! We all knew that crazy scream Cheatijima did would come back to bite him in the butt.

    Very funny Anna! =D

By Blogger erin, at 4/21/2005 3:16 PM

  • I know Brendan was looking forward to a rematch in the 200...but I am sure Cheatajima will be there in the 100. Coming off the Olympics, I know Brendan was disappointed in not doing his best time on that platform and thus missing out on the individual win. (Tough to be WR holder and get the silver when you know what your best would have gotten you).
All of you going to Montreal will definitely see Brendan's best as he races not only the competition and the clock...but himself. Would he have liked for Cheato to be in pool when he obliterates the field? Sure. But when everyone sees the time he puts up in his races...who the actual competitors are won't matter.

By Blogger Aunt "C", at 4/21/2005 3:33 PM

  • Another article about it from The Daily Yomiuri:

    http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/20050422wo54.htm

Check out the quotes from Kitajima. Whatever, dude.

By Blogger JHD, at 4/21/2005 3:38 PM

  • *high fives Aunt C*

By Blogger Kimberly, at 4/21/2005 4:14 PM

  • Hey Aunt C well said! I had to laugh at your nick name for Kitajima.

By Blogger Mrs. H, at 4/21/2005 4:19 PM

  • Whoopsiedaisies!

Just beware of scary bald Hungarian teenagers in all forms. That's all I'm saying.

By Blogger Verbal, at 4/21/2005 4:20 PM

  • We should change Cheatajima's nick to Kosuke "Bad Karma" Kitajima. I mean, regardless of which place he finished he didn't even meet the minimum qualifying time. I'm really interested to see what happens with the 50 and the 100.

Ok, this is kind of off topic, but how cool a name is Ai Shibata? Why can't I have a name that cool?

By Blogger Michelle, at 4/21/2005 8:47 PM

  • Michelle, I am pretty sure cool names like that are limited to like one cool name per 999 thousand people.

I too, lack a cool name. *sigh*

By Blogger crockersmyhero, at 4/22/2005 1:49 AM

  • This news is shocking..... I am not speechless because I am kinda laughing right now. It is bit funny, but I hope this doesn't offend any Kitajima's fans.
Bren has a better chance to grab gold in 200m, but we gotta watch out for the Hungarian teenager.
I think 100m is closest race between Bren and Kitajima. I cross my finger to hope that Bren is the one who will touch the wall first.

By Blogger Maxine, at 4/22/2005 2:38 AM

  • off topic sorry:

i hope you all watched the Today show this morning, i was on modeling jeans hahahaha. it was hands down the most ridiculous i have ever felt in my life, but i had fun :)

By Blogger suzanne, at 4/22/2005 8:35 AM

  • Seriously Suzanne you have the best job ever!

Hang out with Olympians...meet everyone that comes on the Today show and get to model jeans on spur of the moment. What a great job.

By Blogger Kate, at 4/22/2005 8:59 AM

  • suzanne, very cool. is matt lauer as cute in person? love him.

    back to Kitacheata.

ok. i thought about this last nite again. why? a boy i coach dolphin kicked on his breast and i freaked. whoops!
ANYWAY - i was telling michelle, i am no longer disappointed, or happy, i am a little worried now. because now, he is either a) going to be uber-ticked off, and being the madman he is, going to go nuts in the 100 and 50
    OR
b)he will runaway with his dolphin fin between his legs.

i'm hoping its option b, but deep down i think it will be a, and in that case, Aunt K needs to pass me the meds!!!!!!
i still have faith bren will kick butt regardless...i'm just sayin, i'd rather HE WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS not be there.
    k. had to vent. thanks.

    By Blogger swimphilly78, at 4/22/2005 10:51 AM

  • Am I the only one who WANTS Kitajima to be there? In the words of Torrance Shipman (from the most excellent movie "Bring It On")... "I define being the best as competing against the best there is out there and beating them. They have to go."

While Kitajima isn't the best in the world, he is the one who got the gold in Athens (in both the 100 - CHEATER - and 200) and Brendan's closest competition. And I do think Kitajima is up there with Brendan, considering he did beat him (fairly) in the 200. I, for one, want to see him go to Worlds, and to see Brendan take him out.

    (Don't stone me, y'all)

    By Blogger a, at 4/22/2005 11:03 AM

  • The Bail Bond fund has become the Party in Montreal fund. Anyone who needs bail money is on their own.

I don't care if Kitajima is there or not. Brendan doesn't need to beat "Krazy Eyes" Kosuke for me to know he's the best breaststroker in the world. He's got the world record and he doesn't dolphin kick. Now, that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see Brendan kick his ass in Montreal and I'm sure it would give Brendan a great deal of satisfaction to do so, but it won't change anything.

By Blogger Michelle, at 4/22/2005 11:29 AM

  • *hugs Atrophy*

I agree with you for the most part. No stoning for you,my pretty. ;)

I can also tell y'all it's just as exciting to see Bren racing against his own record. So either way I'm truly exciting to be going to Montreal.

By Blogger blairbecky, at 4/22/2005 11:36 AM

  • This Kitajima thing leaves Brendan fans feeling so bipolar. Isn't everyone a little thrilled and a little bummed out, simultaneously?

Imagine that Kitajima was just a little stronger at Japanese trials, and had qualified second at 2:13.change. If he had made finals in Montreal, and swam that same time - the broadcasters would probably cut him off on film. The winner (we know who that will be) would finish, the cameras/photographers would zoom in as he hit the wall, and you wouldn't even be able to see Kitajima on screen, he'd be so far back in the pool. Is it still fun to face the cheating archrival if he doesn't bring his A-game? It would've been dazzling to see Brendan absolutely pound him, but in effect, that's already done. We know who the best is, there was never really any question.

I think Gyurta will bring his A-game in the 200 - I hope so. It's really not swimming without a speedy bald Hungarian on the bronze medal podium, behind two Americans (bad Dana: kidding kidding)

    DC

  • Michelle: one word for you involving the Party in Montreal fund: discotheque. Apparently our hotel has an authentic canadienne-francaise venue. Can't wait to watch us try and order a Jack and Coke at THAT place. ("uh, um, jacques et coca-cola, tres fort [strong], oui, ooh. Yum.")

Have you all heard about Tam Tam? Google that. Maryn and Celine (two Montreal-born girls I work with all the time) swear it's the best Sunday fun in Montreal ... might be perfect for a little cultural pregame to relay finals, assuming the prelims don't last all day.

  • jacques et coca-cola, tres fort.
    jacques et coca-cola, tres fort.
    jacques et coca-cola, tres fort.

    this is my montreal-mantra.

(except i will most likely pronounce it JACK IT COCACOLA TREEFORT)
    thank you dc.

    By Blogger swimphilly78, at 4/22/2005 12:24 PM

  • Atrophy..I'm with you. I wanted Cheato to be in the 200 because I wanted to witness the beating, and because I know it is what Brendan wanted. Regardless, I have the utmost(Proud aunt's)confidence that Brendan will put a time up that Cheato couldn't touch even at his best...and therefore it won't matter.
I am also curious about the bald Hungarian with the funky stroke. He has the endurance, but lacks the speed. He is going to have gotten much faster since Athens and be able to hold it in order to touch a 2:09.
Finally, Suzanne...I did see the Today Show and that clip...which one were you?

By Blogger Aunt "C", at 4/22/2005 12:30 PM

  • Yes Matt Lauer is that cute in person

and Aunt C i was the one in the middle, giggling like whoa. All the camera men were laughing at me- trying to make me laugh, of course it worked :) but i had fun!

you have to come for a tour sometime, ill tell you my brendan in athens stories haha

By Blogger suzanne, at 4/22/2005 2:04 PM

  • Deena, not only will I not stone you, I agree with you 100%. We all know Brendan can set a WR without swimming against Kitajima (see: Olympic Trials), but Cheato really is his best competition these days, even without the dolphin kick. And it has to be nice to actually *have* competition now and then. Like DC said, I'm feeling a little bipolar on the whole thing.

Speaking of dolphin kicks, I witnessed an amusing reverse scenario last weekend. I was at a master's meet, and some guy swam the 200 fly using a breaststroke kick the whole way. The best part is that he wasn't DQ'd (why bother), and he got out of the water all macho-like after finishing first out of the startling lineup of two competitors, apparently completely unaware that he didn't actually swim butterfly the entire time. Reminded me of my age group days, except this guy was closer to 60 than 6.
