Olympic Flavor Added to Gulf States Challenge
SwimInfo put up an article yesterday about the Gulf States Challenge.
There is, of course, more to the article, but that is the important part.
Crawfish Aquatics, the host of the event, has the psych sheets up now too. Brendan will be swimming on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Competition starts at 9am on both days. Warm up starts at 8am. (That is the part I like...)
"There will be an Olympic feel this weekend to the Gulf States Challenge, sponsored by Crawfish Aquatics. The competition, held Friday through Sunday, will feature special 50-meter races including the likes of Aaron Peirsol and Brendan Hansen."

How awesome is this meet!! I can't imagine how excited the age group swimmers in LA are right now. I remember just meeting Mary T Meagher at a meet when I was about 12 and that was a HUGE thrill. But actually getting to swim with the OLYMPIANS....Good luck to all the kids in LA..Have fun Brendan.

Kate- I hear you. A few kids on my team STILL talk about meeting Brendan...just yesterday one of the little girls was saying how she saw him in the pool(months ago)...and with a big smile said "He had big feet!"
She whispered that part like it was a secret. Adorable!!!
Its unbelievably inspiring at that age, at any age really just to meet one of your idols, get an autograph, or a picture....but to actually swim with him? AWESOME.

Well I've been thinking....this isn't just good for the little kids. What about us "old" kids? A
Autograph? check
Photo with Olympian? check
Swam with an Olympian?
Still waiting to complete my list. Anyone know where I can find an Olympian?

Well good luck Bren!

I am about to show my ignorance. (Possibly for the first time.... ahem.) I don't really understand the term "age group swimmers". I read I that term alot, but can't quite understand it. And when do you go from one group to another?

lala - about the term age group swimmers, don't know if the term is the same in US as here, but you compete with swimmers that are the same age as you. That is so you don't have to compete with "big swimmers" like Brendan when you are 12, but other 12 year olds. I don't know if you compete with swimmers that are born in the same year as yourself, like here in Norway, or if you have divided the groups differently in the US.
Anyway, I agree with swimphilly - meeting with one of your idols like that must be so great and inspiring to those kids. I hope they all have fun.

I know it's not Brendan and you would have to come to Minnesota. At least you would maybe get to swim with some Olympians : )

Lala:
Age group swimming is when the events are actually broken down into age groups.
8 and unders, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14,and then I think its called OPEN after that. (Well at least that's how it was here in KY in the 90's)
Once you get to a certain level though: Junior Nationals/Seniors and Trials everyone swims together, bc they made a qualifing time.
Although I don't really know the exact definition. I just call any "kids" swimming age group bc I swim Masters which is 18 and up, for those that are out of college but want to continue swimming on a team/compete.
I hope that helps. :o)

I sure am posting a lot today...oh well work can wait.
Thanks for the info kellypete...but I'm 26, I don't think I would qualify. haha...and actually after I posted that I realized that I do swim at the same time at the same pool as Rachel Komasarz. So I guess Im pretty lucky in that aspect. She just not as much fun to watch as Brendan though. :) Im sure all you girls will agree with me on that.
Have a great FRIDAY!

Thanks kate and tinkerbell, that does help quite a bit. When I was looking at the pcych sheet I was seeing all differnt ages of the swimmers at this meet. And thought that was cool. Sounds like the age group swimmers will be thrilled. (Notice how I used my new vocab in a sentance.)

Yep kate's got it. Picture little league lala. Like t-ball, up to big leagues...most kids swim for their high schools, but still swim for clubs in the offseason.
I would like to swim with Olympians too Kate. Lets make this happen. Sounds easy enough. Though I dont think I'd be swimming with them...I'd probably lay at the bottom of the pool and watch them swim over me. :)

As for swimming with olympians, I'll just keep you all safe. I'll float on my raft and make sure that swimphilly doesn't stay too long on the floor of the pool( thinking cameron in Ferris Bueller). I have no doubt that I will be inspired, just like the kiddies you guys are mentioning:)

I think Michelle needs to come back already. I have been Googleing Brendan all day and still can't find any news from the Hall of Fame induction. Did any of you Philly locals attend? Give us the scoop!
I like the way you think swimphilly.

Kate-There is nothing on there that says there is an age limit : )
Why swim with olympians when you can just look at them!
By
kellypete, at 4/29/2005 2:33 PM
thank you heather. and EA.
kellypete, remember those underwater tea parties you had when you were little and playing in the pool? we can have one of those. wave hi to bren! it wouldnt work on aaron though. crap.
and it'd have to be in the deep end(so we dont get kicked in the head by olympic swimmer big feet)
that will be fun.

I had forgotten about those...man I loved them though. I am up for it if you are. We will defintely have to be in the deep end though because I don't want to be kicked. I'll bring the cookies.

Ohh I just had the most amusing fun, first I went trolling for "Dark Chocolate m&ms", (that is being added to the list of un-mentionalbles in the chatroom drinking game by the way) and I found a bag of Glow in the Dark Milky Way bars. Sounded pretty hazardous, so I bought them. I held the little candy under the light for 2 minutes to see if it would glow. Then I read the small print. They have Glow in the Dark "wrappers". And they call this the "fun" size. Not fun.
So then I played with my new toy. I played with it for hours. Here. I will share it with you. Play with it.

I,too, played your game EA. Naughty admin for getting me to do that. Of course,I was stubborn enough to keep going...lol.
Hmmm...wonder how the guys are doing down in LA. Has anyone heard if Meesh was making her way to the meet on the trip home?
