FINA changes rules after Athens dispute
Swimming's world governing body FINA has changed one of its most contentious rules after the controversy triggered by Kosuke Kitajima's victories at last year's Athens Olympics.
The Japanese student won gold medals in the 100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke in the Greek capital despite complaints from American backstroker Aaron Peirsol that he had performed an illegal, though fairly common, dolphin kick on one of his turns.
However, FINA announced on Friday it had decided to end the long row over dolphin kicks by changing the rule, allowing swimmers to legally make one underwater kick after each turn.
The controversy over dolphin kicks has been around since the finger was first pointed at competitors at the 1978 world championships in Berlin, but US head coach Dave Salo said he did not agree with FINA's decision to change the rule just because of the recent drama.
"It's not a rule I'm in favour of," he told a news conference.
"Any time the rules change there's always going to be coaches who will try to find ways to get around it. "It's always open to interpretation ... so hopefully we'll get officials well trained in observing a second dolphin kick."
FINA also announced two technical changes in backstroke, allowing competitors to start races with their feet above the water line as well as being allowed to submerge on their glide into the wall.
Peirsol, a close friend of American breaststroker Brendan Hansen, was initially disqualified for an illegal turn in Athens after winning the 200 metres backstroke, but was reinstated on appeal.
The new rules will not be introduced for two months, meaning the old ones will still apply at next week's world championships.
Wheeeee! I leave for Montreal in 30 minutes but will be keeping the website updated while away and uploading photos as I can. 100 Breast Prelims tomorrow morning and the Final on Monday. Y'all be sure to follow the results live on the Omega website.

Feet above the water in backstroke? Yes! And you couldn't submerge at the touch? News to me. Hmm.

Michelle, you're a doll! Getting to see new pics from Montreal while you actually are there is really a treat! Have fun, all of you, and cheer on Brendan and the others for me!
FINA changing the rules - I'm just shaking my head. Are they going to change the rules everytime there is an episode like in Athens? I'm not a fan of it. But never mind, as you all said, Brendan will smoke the competition in Montreal either way. I'm sending all my positive energy his way.

Is it just me, or do they kind of make it sound like Aaron was the only one complaining? And there was nothing wrong with his turn!
Sorry, I too don't favor this rule... Dave Salo and I are one the same track here...
Have fun Michelle... and the rest of you going... I've got my VCR set and cheap entertainment until swimming starts thanks to my mom (waiting for her new cell phone to arrive... like a kid at Christmas... and, since she's little, it's adorable)

Have fun y'all in Montreal.
This rule things is getting intomy nerves. I'm aware rules change all the time, it happens a lot in archery. But they usually mean admens to old rules to keep preventing people getting unfair advantage (like two sight markers in the limbs, etc). But this whole dolphin kick is making me sick.
Salo is right.

Shannen..those Ian pics are to die for!
I know! My first thought was, "Oh no, Sarah's missing these!" Then I thought that heck--she's probably seeing him in *person* right now, so pictures would be kind of a letdown after that!

Brendan qualified 2nd in his heat this morning with a time of 59.84. This is an amazing time and he is just getting started.
Of course, the funny thing of all being me screaming to9 my screen while watching Omega Live REsults "Vamos Brendan!"....
My neighbours are calling the lunacy house. I convinced them to let me stay one more week and then I'll retreat there myself

Well done, Brendan!
Stupid Swedish channel - they stopped showing the swimming right before Brendan was going to swim, to show some other programme, and said that the rest of the prelims was going to be shown on another Swedish channel that I don't have. And Eurosport is only showing diving. Grr! Thank God for Omega Live Timing! Just in time to "watch" Brendan swim. They even show the names of every swimmer in the relays. Hope you Montreal folks are having good time, looks like you have nice weather.

Yahoo's wrap up of this morning has a bit about Brendan:
The men's 100 breaststroke is shaping up as another memorable showdown between American world record holder Brendan Hansen and Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, who beat Hansen for the gold medal in Athens.
Kitajima set a meet record in the prelims, his time of 59.71 edging the mark he set two years ago in Barcelona (59.78). Hansen was right behind at 59.84.
"I definitely held back," Hansen said. "I definitely feel confident about the way I swam."
Kitajima knows what he has to do.
"I need to break the world record to win the race," he said, already looking ahead to Monday night's final. "I was trying not to be aware of Hansen because it's just a preliminary."
Oh, shut up, Cheato. You'll be aware of Brendan when you're watching him finishing in front of you in the finals!

Jenny - Just go to www.gettyimages.com and on the first page their should be a heading reading "FINA World Swimming Championships" or somethign like that. They are constantly moving the pics around so its hard to post a direct link. There are a couple of great ones including a close up of Brendan's rings!
Brendan's time was excellent! I can't wait to see what happens, especially since he's holding back. He seems really pumped. GO BRENDAN!!
