New Gallery Additions

I've added several new images to the gallery this weekend. First off our faaavorite photographer Peter Bick (he looks much younger than he professes to be) and Kiwikwis (a new member who joined us at chat last night) have been added to the Blogger gallery. In addition kiwi sent me a couple of really nice photos she took of Brendan at the Santa Clara meet.

And finally, Shannen found this lovely photo of the Texas boys taken in Long Beach during the Olympic Trials. Aaron has such an "interesting" collection of hats doesn't he?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLAIR! I can't wait to meet you in Montreal.

  • Wheee! Happy Birthday Blair!

There was a little story posted with that picture from a poster named Bill:

We stayed long enough for the next wave of seating, and Masters swimmer Rich Abrahams was seated behind us with his friend and training partner Bill Abbott. A few moments later, the table where Carvin and Jensen had been sitting was occupied by a new group, which included Olympians and world record holders Ian Crocker, Brendan Hansen and Aaron Piersol.

After we all picked our jaws up off the floor, we decided to break our own rules about bothering swimmers during meals and say hello. While our teenage companion was getting autographs, I was compelled to stand up and tell Ian Crocker that everyone in his home state of Maine is going absolutely nuts right now. I was in Maine about a week ago, and it seemed like Crocker was on the front page almost every day.

A few moments later, Rich Abrahams went over with his camera and said "My wife would kill me if I didn't get a picture of you guys." Because Rich is a very humble champion and would never tell the Olympians who he was, I stood up and said, "You guys should really know who this is taking your picture. This guy is the fastest man ever over 55. He goes 48. for the 100 yard free." They were all very impressed and wanted to shake his hand.

I introduced myself and directed their attention to our booth, where June Krauser was sitting, and I told them about her involvement with the development of Masters swimming. Once again, they were very impressed. While we were chatting, I made sure to invite them to join us in Masters when they were done swimming at the international Olympic level. Hopefully they will. Just after I sat down again, Eddie Reese came over to our booth to say hello to June. We all introduced ourselves and talked briefly about Masters swimming.

Anyway, I found out what Aaron Piersol had at the Long Beach Cafe the day he set his world record. It was a grilled chicken cobb sandwich with bacon, crumbled bleu cheese and avocado. He wasn't sure if it was the reason for his record, but he did enjoy it.

So it was nice to hear that even before such a huge meet, the guys were so nice to folks who approached them.

  • Happy birthday blair!

Good find Shannen, the full article from above is posted here:

Funny, I think my friend and I had dinner at that cafe right after finals when we were in LB. I remember looking around & seeing all the swimmers eating together, and thinking, "I miss that." At that point though, I had no idea who the trio was, much less the presence of mind to lookout for them and take pictures. *sigh*

48 in the 100 free at age 55? That is FAST. Master's Nationals are down in Mission Viejo this summer, I may have to trek down there and be inspired in person.

  • Thanks for the article link y'all! I had no idea there was a story that went with it. Very nice.

  • 48 in the 100 free at age 55?

He's older than that, I believe--the poster said he was the fastest ever *over* 55, if that doesn't boggle your mind! LOL!

Cool! I didn't know that was a Swimming World article--I just stumbled on a thread that contained that story because it also had some nice Ian stories from someone who swims at UT's pool (but I won't bore ya'll with those!)

Also, Aaron's lunch is making me hungry, yo! That actually sounds pretty good, even though chicken *and* bacon are probably more meat than I eat in an entire week!

  • WHY WHY WHY don't the Longhorns have one? HUH? Huh?..... huh?

Because they know if they had a webcam, I would never, never, never get anything done at the office. Ever. ;)

  • Does anyone else find it insanely cool that people like...John, Peter Bick, Brendan's family members, and Brendan himself come on this blog?
You ladies ROCK! They just can't resist this place!

    By Blogger molly_mormon88, at 7/11/2005 11:46 PM

  • I can't resist it either.. this place is fun!!

By Blogger lala, at 7/12/2005 2:54 AM

  • Whee! Thanks so much. I had a great birthday. I can't wait to celebrate it in Montreal with all of y'all. I think there should be a day put aside just for Lala and I. ;)

A Texas webcam would be my undoing. I don't think I would accomplish anything so it's best they don't get one...lol.

  • Happy (Late) Birthday BLAIR!!!!
Im glad you had a good day and Im sure there will be lots of good times in Montreal.

    CRACKINUP: GO.
go down to nationals. They are a blast! and SO inspirational. will you swim or just go to watch?
I wish I could go and swim. Some of my teammates are going.

By Blogger Kate, at 7/12/2005 11:03 AM

  • Kate, you should go! I'll almost certainly go to watch and cheer on my team, I have until tomorrow to decide if I'm going to swim. ;-) I've swum long course exactly twice in the past year, but I'm thinking I might be able to pull off the 50 fly without drowning and/or embarrassing myself.
