One year ago this week....

On July 8th, 2004 Brendan broke the world record in the 100 meter breaststroke at the US Olympic Trials and on the 11th he came back and broke the 200m record as well. Records are still standing. Wheeeee!

  • I remember last year wishing I weren't so afraid of those bleachers. I live 2 miles from the trials and I was too scared to go.... What an amazing week that was! (Or so I read in the paper) Even the Olympics have come and still those records stand. Congrats Brendan!

  • Yay, Brendan! You've kept the records for a year now. Congratulations!

    I could kick myself for not realizing those trials were in Long Beach until it was too late. I have no idea how long it will be until they're in Southern California again, but I won't make that mistake again.

  • Hard to fathom that trials were a YEAR ago, it went so fast ... the next three could pass in a similar snap. I am already preparing my bleacher cushion for Omaha. ;)
    Michelle, you make such a good point with the original post: imagine holding a world record that stands for a year ... just consider the enormity of that, to be the best in the world at something so unquestionably, and the clock absolutely proving it.

  • WOW
    that was a year ago?! i remember it like yesterday.
    Aunt K if your reading- I remember after trials, you came into work skipping (well not literally skipping)but when you came back to my desk after you got back from LB, you were SO SO excited and proud of brendan... i also remember you telling me how terrifyingly high the bleachers/stands were at the pool -and that you were sitting at the VERY top, which were wobbling, and (you thought your other nephew was shaking the stands. HAHA)
    but from Trials until the Olympics everyone was so pumped...that was fun. Nerve-wracking, but fun!!!
    MONTREAL = 2 WEEKS!!!!

  • posting on behalf of J.Lo, who is driving while I type (wireless internet access in his car. COOL.) He says his memories of trials are well-documented and he doesn't want to bore with reiteration, but he can't believe it's been a year, and he's looking forward to similarly stunning future accomplishments. :)

  • Happy One Year Anniversary BRendan!

    What you have accomplished so far in your career is so special. The fact that your records still stand in such a competitive swimming field shows how talented you are.

    Congratulations..and we are always here to support you.

  • Hah, I remember being there when he set the 100 record, stands a-swayin, fans going ballistic, me cheering along with the others as I wondered, "Who IS this Brendan fella?" How far we've come in a year.

    JLo has wireless internet in his CAR? How does one get wireless in a vehicle? Sign me up, god knows I spend enough time in my car.
