Brendan heavily featured in (and on) October's Swimming World Magazine
Not only is there a great feature article written by John Lohn, but he's mentioned in two additional articles and there's a great section on Breaststroke turns by Glenn Mills featuring the best turner in the business (yes, of course I'm talking about Brendan and you can find them in the gallery - 1, 2, 3, 4).

And how cute is this picture of little high school Brendan before he was all ripped?

And lastly, Nike FINALLY has an ad featuring Brendan right smack in the middle of his article. I hate to complain but seriously, why did they feel the need to photoshop the goggle straps out? And why that particular photo when they have some really hot ones that they used on his autograph card? Why didn't Nike ask me for MY opinion??!!? Er, I mean US... Why didn't Nike ask us for OUR opinion???!!?

So, what do you guys think? Do you like the ad? Does it make you want to go buy some Nike gear? (Blair always wants to buy Nike gear so she is disqualified from voting).

Michelle! You're back! The ad is weird... the goggle thing is the first thing I noticed. It just looks strange. I don't mind the picture so much, but I agree it seems like they had better pictures to choose from.
But I guess we can't complain too much since they could have not done it at all...

That really is the Brendan issue of Swimning World. He is everywere in there. I love the new monacle version of the goggles. Bren is so fast that the G- force of his swimming hold them on his eyes! I am sure that's what that picture is trying to say.

Just noticed that it has a url on the ad... probably not a good sign that when I type it I get a "this page does not exist" error.

Brendan is just taking over, thats all this shows. Pretty awesome.
The high school pictures is super adorable, but I do haev to agree with ya about the ad, Meesh. The missing straps are a huge distraction to me...so unnecessary. And? Those pictures form his autograph card are super hot, I do't know why they didnt use those instead.
I also tried the url jessie, and got an error as well. Maybe they're just starting to ut it together (finally)? I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt...haha. BUt it is dissappointing that there's nothing there

This was my email to Nike:
I saw an ad in swimming world that had Brendan Hansen in it. At the bottom of
the ad there was the address www.nike.com/swim but when I typed this in I got a
error message. Is this site coming or was there a printing error?
This was their response:
Dear Blair,
Thank you for contacting Nike through our website. I appreciate your inquiry
regarding a possible 'Nike Swim' website.
First off, congratulations on being in a swim advertisement which was inside of
a published magazine! With that said, we currently do not have a specific Nike
Swim website. I do apologize for the misprint in the published magazine.
However, for some great Nike Swimwear, please visit any of the listed authorized
Nike Swimwear retailers below:
They then go to tell all the places I can buy Nike swimsuits. Now why would they think some random person would be in a Nike ad. Yowza! I'm the first one to defend Nike because I love their stuff. My favorite swimsuit is a cute blue Nike one that I adore. With the exception of a few that's the only kind of shoes I buy. I've always been a Nike girl but they really need to get on top of this swimming thing.

I don't know--I've always loved the action shots. The goggle straps are weird, though. I'm surprised no one noticed or if they did that they didn't care.
It's nice to see him getting so much press now.

blairbecky that is such a odd response! I mean, they must have been skimming their messages and not really paid attention to what you were saying. But WHY would the Nike advertising department put a URL on a ad that doesn't exist and have no intention to exist...

That's hilarious Blair, thanks for sharing!
I should really apply to Nike to run their swimming division, at least the marketing side of it. They're probably so busy hiring people with retail and consumer products experience, they don't have anyone who actually knows the sport. Unfortunately for them, I like my current job, but I can be swayed by $$$$$$. ;-)
Regarding the strangely absent goggle straps, my guess is they blocked the swoosh logo. It does look funny though. And yet, kind of cool.

Terrie found some strapless goggles that Nike sells last night so my guess is this is their way of advertising them - HOWEVER - I really doubt they'd work well for a swimmer like Brendan who still has trouble keeping the ones WITH straps on. Would the fast boys be able to wear them? I just can't see them staying on as they whip through those turns.

These guys spend so much time in the water. So maybe science has advanced to goggle implants. I am glad this is dated so that when some wacky scientist invents them, I can get a little of the profits.

Nice to see you again Michelle!!
So cool to see so much of Brendan in the news, even if I do think it's kinda weird that he has no goggle straps in that one ad. The skinny teenage Brendan is also adorable.

Seriously? Strapless goggles? I've heard of some bad ideas, but that's a homerun winner. Forget fast swimmers, I really doubt they'd work well for anyone with a head, and eyes.
By
crackinup, at 10/06/2006 9:09 PM
OK. I've given this lots of thought. It's either the centrifugal force that keeps the goggles in place or a hell of a lot of spirit gum. I hope it's the first because the second would be awfully painful to remove!

I wonder if the strapless goggles use the same adhesive as the celebrities use to keep those dresses on. Okay, most of them manage to keep their dresses on. Been a couple of slips of course.
It finally came to me what bothers me about that pic. They took Bren's name and the US flag off the cap. Usually his name is on the right side, swoosh on the left, flag on the front. Not that I've seen alot of pics of Bren or anything. ;)
By
blairbecky, at 10/07/2006 9:44 AM
Are you sure? I know at Pan Pacs Brendan and Aaron's caps didn't have their name or flag on it.
By
Jessie, at 10/07/2006 12:11 PM
Yep I'm sure. The pic on the homepage is from Pan Pacs and it's on there. I think the only cap that doesn't is the white one from Olympic trials and of course the Texas ones.
By
blairbecky, at 10/07/2006 12:40 PM
I need to chime in on this debate. Aaron and Brendan and Jason all have those caps without their names or USA on them that they wear when they are competing nationally. When they go international they have names and flags. At least that is how it seems to me. But as far as the swoosh goes, it lives on the left hand front of the cap. That photo is completely wrong! Wrong wrong wrong. And I am not sure if it was Terrie or Sarah but one of them discovered that Nike really does make strapless goggles. My question is.. WHY?
By
lala, at 10/07/2006 10:29 PM
Ah the flag is on the front, I was thinking it was on the side and I didn't remember seeing that.
By
Jessie, at 10/08/2006 2:20 AM
Here are the Nike strapless goggles.
This is a little blurb about the goggles. Notice that it was published during the Athens Olympics but we haven't seen anyone wear them. I wonder why that is.

Terrie, at 10/08/2006 1:29 PM
I would like to add my thoughts on this subject.
I think swimmers are not going for them for several reason:
1. size- they are really huge! most swimmers like the goggles to fit inside the eye socket for a nice snug fit! These fit outside.
2. glued on- the only ones that would benefit from this type are the distance swimmers and the open water swimmers. Who do not have to put the goggles on and off so often.
3. cost- being practical here. because I am a parent and use to buy tons of these things and had boys who contantly left them EVERYWHERE. I can buy $2-$3 swetish goggles for my kids to loose, I would just die if they lost a pair of $24 ones. Plus, I could see it now, they would say....Mom I can only find one...I have know idea where the other one went too.
Like I said I am just being practical.
I wish they had asked me first! hahahha
I remember when Speedo came out with that big rubber black cap. Their representative showed me that when they were talking to us. I looked at it and said to him then.....this will never fly. Too heavy, will keep the heat in, and will weigh the swimmers down. What were you thinking?????Don't see that around much either.
The people that make these things must have never been in the water!

My luck one would get stuck on permanently and the other would get stuck in my hair. Good points Mrs. H.

I have a feeling that the graphic artist who airbrushed off that strap knows about as much about swimming as does the copywriter who naively assumed that "www.nike.com/swim" exists. :) He's probably charged with one mission: protect the swoosh. :)
I see that stuff happen at my job sometimes. We asked to have a pic lightly airbrushed; when it came back, one of the guys in it had only one leg (group shot). Bad, bad, bad scene.
I was teasing John last night that he should autograph this Swimming World's cover and present it to the Hansen family. Hee hee!

Dana Cara, at 10/11/2006 12:06 PM
John could actualy consider this his first novel. He contributed so much of the content! Haha!

Again, these are real goggles. My teen using them for swim team. She was given them by her aunt who works with Nike Swim to try out. My teen normally wears Swedes and found these goggles to work fine. The adhesive strip holds tightly and does leave a 'raccoon" mark around your eyes when removed.
The adhesive pads are expensive to purchase and make the goggles too costly, in my opinion. (Especially since Swedes are so inexpensive.)
As a long time swim parent I can see two great times this goggle would work well:
for swimmers who forget to keep their chin tucked on dive and end up with goggles falling down.
to relieve parents from the constant reminder to swimmers: put your goggles on before you get on the block!
Otherwise...it is a bit spendy.
