Brendan cleared for relay....but not so fast.

U.S. DQ in 400 Medley Relay Puts End to Phelps' Chase for Eight
By John Lohn

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 31. MICHAEL Phelps' bid for an eighth gold medal at the World Championships was taken out of his hands this morning when the United States was disqualified in the preliminaries of the 400 medley relay. The U.S. touched first in the heat, clocking 3:34.72, but an early takeoff by Ian Crocker on the butterfly leg led to the DQ.

With Scott Usher coming into the wall from the breaststroke leg, Crocker went for a quality start, one that turned out to be too good, as he left the blocks just before Usher's hand hit the touchpad. The disqualification prevents Phelps from swimming on the medley relay at night and the chance to go 8-for-8. If Phelps win the 400 individual medley tonight, he'll have seven gold medals.

"We thought we were being conservative," said Neil Walker, who was on the freestyle anchor. "It's disappointing because Michael was trying to do something that has never been done. This is the type of thing that happens. There's no other explanation. We thought it looked fine on the replay. It looked like Usher touched and Ian's toes were still on the block. But, that's not what the official reading said."

Damn.

  • Oh that's so hard to read. I feel bad for everyone involved. From what I've heard about Ian, I'm sure he's going to be hard on himself.

  • That really sucks. I was looking forward to getting to see Brendan swim again. I guess I'll have to wait for the broadcast of Duel.

  • Darn :-/ I also hope Ian (and all of the team members) are taking it okay--at least there's Duel in the Pool to look forward to.

  • Yeah, it totally sucked! Poor Ian. I too was looking forward to seing the American team in the relay.

But with the Americans not swimming, it was good to see the Aussies win the relay. Though the commentator said they swam slower than the Americans did in the prelims...

  • Awww...I feel bad for the relay team. I'm sure they would have loved to swim that last race. Anyway, stuff happens and it's no fun to dwell on it. Ian,you still rock and y'all will get it next time. :)

  • Brutal. I'm sure Ian is beating himself up badly over it. This is one of those days where having a coach like Eddie makes all the difference. It's made harder by the fact that they were winning commandingly by then and there was no reason to snap off the block unless it was to try and make the final individually ...

Look at Brendan representing for the Team award. Sooo nice.

On a totally different note - I was thrilled for Ben Wildman-Tobriner. Such a good, polite, classy kid who hasn't had an easy time of it lately either (with the Skip Kenney thing).
