World Championships: Brendan Hansen Defends Crown in 100 Breaststroke

American Hansen wins 100m breaststroke final

Hansen beats Kitajima to defend world breaststroke title
The admitted chip Hansen has had on his shoulder since Athens surfaced again Monday night, saying his latest win didn't stop reporters from pointing out his losses four years ago.

"It doesn't make up for you guys. You still call him Olympic champion and me just a guy who's got a bunch of medals," Hansen said. "I obviously won't make it to your par until I make an Olympic medal."

Hansen now owns four consecutive victories over Kitajima.

He beat the Japanese star in the 100 at the world championships two years ago in Montreal. Hansen won the 100 and 200 over Kitajima at the Pan Pacific championships in August before claiming victory in Melbourne.

Hansen and Kitajima were the only swimmers to break 1 minute in the final that was contested before plenty of empty seats at Rod Laver Arena.

"Sometime if there was synchro swimming (for men), me and him should team up," Hansen said. "It's just one of those things where he brings out the best in me and I bring out the best in him. If the crowd loves it and puts more attention on our sport, so be it."

One more pic. I'll update the Melbourne Gallery as soon as I can.

  • Yeah, congratulations Brendan! What an exciting race. I was so proud to hear the right national anthem... And it was so great to see Kitajima's face during the medal ceremony ;-)

  • Congratulations B Hansen!!!

and i agree with his quote in the article. I find it perplexing that the media still focuses on the fact the Kitajima won an Olympic medal, but kind of "breezes" over the fact that since then, Brendan has kicked his ass SO MANY times after that.

    Mind boggling.

  • Yes!!! Congratulations, Brendan!

    That second picture? Gorgeous.

  • Way to go B-Man!!!

What an exciting race it must've been for everyone involved.

I must add that the picture of Brendan reaching down to put his hand into the water has got to be one of the most beautiful pics that I have seen in a while. Very artsy if that makes any sense, ;).

  • Congratulations Brendan!!
Its great to see you in that number one spot on the podium where you belong.
..and no worries about the media dwelling on Kitajima winning in Athens, everyone knows you are the best ever and have accomplished so much more in the stroke than he has...and Beijing is just around the corner. =)

  • Yay! Congratulations Brendan. Great job!

By Blogger afadingvoice, at 3/26/2007 11:45 AM

  • Gina, I asked Brendan today..What was the media's reaction to your response when you said, No matter how many medals I have you will still throw the title up etc...He said, They all started laughing. John Lohn was in the back laughing the hardest.

I love the second pic as well. Love his tan, and am so jealous.

  • Just caught the highlights broadcast on FSN. That was really nice and how great that we got to see the whole anthem, too.

Interesting extra stroke at the end there by the Japanese competitor. It was almost as if he got lured into swimming someone else's race.... ;-)

By Blogger Jane, at 3/26/2007 3:52 PM

  • Way to go Brendan!!!

What are you gonna do with those press folks?? I suggest you challenge them to a race. Some might even be able to swim..then again.

    Peter

By Blogger Peter Bick, at 3/26/2007 3:53 PM

  • man..i didn't know FSN was showing highlights. Do they come on everynight at a certain time?

By Blogger jenny, at 3/26/2007 4:42 PM

  • Hooray!! Congratulations Bren!! You more than deserved to be up on that podium with a gold medal around your neck, flowers in your hand, and a penguin in the other :)

Second pic: b-e-a-utiful. And I agree Mrs. H, I'm totally jealous of Bren's tan.

By Blogger erin, at 3/26/2007 4:51 PM

  • Congratulations Brendan!!!!!
I'm so happy for you :)

By Blogger Alexandra, at 3/26/2007 4:57 PM

  • Oh Brendan, what a victory!!! You must possess nerves of steel yet handled it all with such grace, a true champion!!!

To the ladies of the morning (aren't you glad of the time difference...think about for sec and you will get what I mean) THANK YOU AGAIN, I promise, I will invest in a new computer before 2008.....you made hearing this race easy on the nerves (except maybe Michelle....she was almost as nervous as MrsH this morning).

By Blogger Aunt K, at 3/26/2007 5:46 PM

  • BRENDAN! sweet lord that was close but awesome!!! CONGRATS!!! SO great....I love the little penguin thing he is holding!!!
I am watching every ounce of swimming I can today...."**cough** I cant make it to work today...**sniff**" :)

    By Blogger swimphilly78, at 3/26/2007 6:04 PM

  • Congratulations Brendan. What an amazing race!

By Blogger Maxine, at 3/26/2007 6:44 PM

  • Hey everyone. When we were interviewing Brendan after the race, I was off to the side and rolled my eyes at the question from the moron reporter who asked about the Olympic stuff. Brendan's answer was quality and definitely got me to laugh - partly because it was a great response and partly because it was a great dig at the reporters who just don't understand all he's done since Athens. They're so blind. I hope I'm not in that group.

By Blogger John, at 3/26/2007 7:15 PM

  • Jenny, FSN is showing them daily at 4, but I'd check your local listings because it changes depending on other scheduling... Like yesterday was only an hour and today was two. SO good to see swimming on tv again. I missed it more than I realized. And so worth staying up until 3am to watch Brendan swim live... although I'm sure my prof didn't like me napping in class.

By Blogger Jessie, at 3/26/2007 7:33 PM

  • Is it too late?
    Anyway, congratulations, Brendan.
    Can't wait for the 200.

By Blogger Stella, at 3/26/2007 9:44 PM

  • Congrats Brendan! I managed to go all day without reading the news online, so I was actually nervous when watching on TiVo. ;-)

John, you are most certainly NOT one of "those reporters." Please.

Speaking of bad reporting, can I dropkick the guys doing the coverage that FSN is broadcasting? (But, cheers to FSN for acquiring the broadcast and showing it daily!) At times, their lack of knowledge was just egregious. Psst, commentators, put down the Australian press release for a nanosecond and watch the actual race. Matt Welsh is not the story in the 100 back when Ryan Lochte's in the lane next to him, swimming at WR pace. Sigh. I miss Rowdy.

But, I'm happy to have the coverage at all. Bren's race was super exciting, as was the women's 100 fly. With 3 53's posted in semis, I am so stoked for the men's 100 back final.

On an unrelated note, am I the only one who is underwhelmed by the crowd fanatacism in Australia? I was expecting mayhem and incessant cheering, but that's definitely not coming across on TV. Fun to see Thorpe in the stands though.

By Blogger crackinup, at 3/27/2007 3:22 AM

  • Mrs. H..I am SO glad that Brendan gave that answer. Quality at its finest!!!
